KRod leaving gave the Angels the pick before the Tex pick. Trout was higher on the draft board than Grichuk. Had the Angels only had one pick, they would have picked Trout.

 

The reasons for Trout being selected after Grichuk is not completely clear but there are theories from negotiation power to the names getting mixed up in transit to MLB.

that's what i've always heard. never heard of the k-rod signing being the reason we got to draft trout.
