New card im looking at is the chase sapphire reserve. its got a hefty annual fee, but also a pretty good annual return ($450 a year, but a $300 a year travel credit if i understand correctly).

But the initial sign up bonus is 100K miles....thats rad...thats like a $1500 credit. if you can afford the annual fee cez, that sign up alone will get to europe twice if you know how to book...

get it!

i picked up two for my wife and i. 200k miles, boom. thats a few round trip flights to europe just by clicking some buttons.

i haven't paid for travels in years. paris, italy, spain, morocco, hawaii, mexico, etc. some first class. all on points. just pick one card with good points rewards and use that for your normal spending. let them make their money on people who can't manage their credit and pay them interest. the rest of us can reap the perks.

or you can go crazy and do the "churning" thing, where people cycles through like 12 credit cards a year. im not to that level though, sounds like a lot of work. but i know people that do it, never pay a cent for travel and non stop travel the world. and they are not in highly paid professions. it's awesome.

State Department warns about possible attacks in Europe during holiday season

Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The State Department on Monday issued an alert to U.S. citizens about a heightened risk of terrorist attacks throughout Europe, particularly during the holiday season.

"U.S. citizens should exercise caution at holiday festivals, events, and outdoor markets," it said in a statement, adding that there was credible information that Islamic State, al Qaeda and their affiliates continued to plan attacks in Europe.

The department noted extremists had carried out attacks in Belgium, France, Germany and Turkey in the past year, and said it remains concerned about the potential for attacks throughout Europe.

"U.S. citizens should exercise vigilance when attending large holiday events, visiting tourist sites, using public transportation, and frequenting places of worship, restaurants, hotels, etc.," the statement said.

retirement isn't too terribly far away for me, hopefully less than ten years. hoping the wife and i can hit some of those places we've always wanted to see. starting to make a list.

The way im going im gonna run out of places before retirement, lol.

Dont you get the summers off tank? even if you and the wife can get away for say one week, you can still go see some cool places for less money than people think. just need to know some good hacks.

summers have had plenty of time off but lots of little things seem to fill them up, plus there's the daughter to consider, plus that whole "hey, we don't have any money left" thing. junior heads off to college next fall, and that'll be another big expense. it's also been a bit hard for me to travel because of my weight and my poor knees, but now that that's changing, it'll be easier for me to be mobile, and that'll be a big plus.

i'd like to go to greece, paris, and egypt, and i'd really like to take a cruise on the st. lawrence waterway by montreal.

back from vegas. never been before for thanksgiving. it was great, little quieter. the air outside was nice and chilly, and man it got dark early.

had a blast though.

did dinner at Guy Savoy (holy f*ck), Nobu (always awesome), Vic & Anthony's (old school vegas, gorgeous place we try and hit up every time), and a few others like the steak place at the Mirage for A5 wagyu and some Macallan 18 year. So many great restaurants in that town. Plus 5am dive food at the casinos.

did cirque do soleil beatles LOVE, and we thought it was one, if not the best, cirque shows we've ever seen.

LOVE is my favorite too.  That was one of the first Cirque do solei shows I saw and none of them have lived up to it since.

I'll join in

Greetings from Cape Town

image.jpeg

I was there in the mid-80's before the end of Apartheid. Sailed and dove and explored my way as far north as Durban along the shipwreck coast. There was a lot of civil unrest in those days but felt safe for the most part.

Carling and Castle beer and great spear fishing and lobstering..would love to go back.
