New Evidence Regarding Napoli/Mathis

Recommended Posts

At the time I didn't care that Nap was traded. He wasn't that good for us. I thought Rivera sucked and wanted him gone. I don't even remember if we tried Nap at 1B.

We can all look back now and claim we knew Nap was great but the truth is he wasn't great.

You don't remember Napoli being our everyday first baseman after Morales broke his ankle? Napoli did a pretty good job considering he'd never played there before.

The Effectively Wild Podcast discussed a new Baseball Prospectus metric on catcher game calling. At the end Sam Miller asked for a comparison of Mathis and Napoli the year before Napoli was traded.

Mathis saved 58 runs

Napoli saved -33 runs

I think Nap became a better catcher once Sosh stopped micromanaging and trying to make him a mini-me behind the plate. Nap was never able to relax with Sosh watching and criticizing everything. He even became a better hitter once he stopped walking on eggshells and worried about what Sosh thinks about his last squat.

Yeah I guess I forgot about that. Anyway he was .238/.316/.468 that year.

So, just a 91 run difference between two catchers in one year, and we are supposed to believe it.

Show your work, folks.

yeah, this is especially curious since sosh called quite a few of the pitches then.

I am hoping that Sosh doesn't micro manage Perez and Bandy.

I'm not saying that Sosh doesn't benefit catchers here. Just that pushing them too hard could have the opposite effect if they are trying to be too perfect behind the plate.
