Chilling video shows corrections officer on knees, handcuffed by prisoner

An Oklahoma City corrections officer was taken to a hospital Saturday after being held hostage on the 10th floor of the Oklahoma County Detention Center -- with videos of the drama posted online.

That floor is known for housing the jail's most difficult-to-manage inmates, The Oklahoman newspaper of Oklahoma City reported.

Officials confirmed for Fox News that one of the inmates holding the corrections officer hostage was shot and killed by Oklahoma City police officers.

The officer had been taken to the hospital for treatment, but the extent of his injuries was not immediately known, Lt. Wayland Cubit of the Oklahoma City Police Department said.

However, the officer managed to leave the jail under his own power after the 4:30 p.m. incident, Jail Administrator Greg Williams told The Oklahoman.

The officer was delivering medication to inmates when he was attacked, tied up, and had his keys taken away, according to local station KWTV-DT News 9.

Girl Scout breaks cookie-selling record with more than 30,000 boxes sold

An 8-year-old from San Bernardino, California broke a record for selling more than 30,000 Girl Scout cookies with a sweet incentive for buyers – a promise to donate boxes to charity.

Lilly Bumpus sold a whopping 32,484 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, smashing the previous record of 26,086 boxes sold in one season, by telling her inspiring story and sharing her mission to donate boxes of the sweet stuff to charity, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Bumpus, who is a "brownie" level scout, is a cancer survivor who overcame Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer, leading her family to create a nonprofit in her name, the Team Lilly Foundation, to help kids battling cancer, according to the newspaper.

"She showed our community and the world it’s more than just buying cookies or buying a product," Lilly’s mother, Trish Bauer, told the San Jose Mercury News.

With a week left of the season, Lilly was determined to set the record for most Girl Scout cookies sold working 11 straight hours outside of her home to sell 500 boxes in a day, Bauer explained to the Mercury News of the boxes purchased online across the country and even internationally in countries like Italy and Canada.

The funding raised will benefit childhood cancer research and feeding homeless communities.

Guest on Tennessee mountain coaster injured after flying out of cart, landing on track

A guest on an amusement attraction in Tennessee was reportedly injured after being thrown from the cart of a mountain coaster on Monday.

Now, the state has reportedly launched an investigation into circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred on the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster in Gatlinburg. A representative for attraction did not immediately return a request for comment.

The injured guest, who was not identified, reportedly "flew out of the cart while entering the curve just past the Kodak camera," according to an incident report cited by WATE. The rider was thrown approximately 10 feet before landing on a section of the coaster’s track.

The guest was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries to the head, wrist and ankle, the report said.

The Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster was closed following Monday’s incident. The ride, however, was allowed to reopen Tuesday, per a letter from the state’s Amusement Device Unit to Gatinburg Mountain Coaster owner Jon Ogle, obtained by WBIR.

The letter, which described the guest’s injuries as "serious," confirmed that a third-party investigator deemed the ride to be in compliance with "applicable industry standards." Tennessee’s Amusement Device Unit, a division of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, was contacted for further information.

A compliance office from the department is said to be investigating.

In 2016, a woman riding the same Gatlinburg mountain coaster was thrown from a cart on the last turn, suffering injuries to her wrists, knee, head and ribs, the Sevier News Messenger reported at the time. Police who reviewed the incident found the woman, 44, had not been wearing a seat belt.

The six-foot-long monitor lizard entered the store after emerging from a nearby canal in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, on April 6th.

Giant lizard sneaks into 7-Eleven, sends customers into hiding

A large reptile reportedly entered a convenience store in Thailand in search of food. The animal apparently sent workers and customers into hiding as it tossed items off the shelves.

The six-foot-long monitor lizard entered the store after emerging from a nearby canal in Nakhon Pathom on April 6th, Southwest News Service (SWNS) reports. The animal reportedly climbed onto shelves and tossed several cartons of milk onto the ground.

Customers and workers reportedly hid behind the store’s counter during the incident.

Fortunately, reptile handlers quickly arrived on the scene and were able to snare the animal. It was reportedly released back into some nearby undergrowth. The animal apparently didn’t actually make off with any food from the store.

Monitor lizards typically feed on fish, snakes and frogs, although they will also eat food left behind by humans if its available.

Five dog tags found in belly of South Carolina monster gator

Ned McNeely brought in this 12’ long 445 lb. private land gator this morning! We don’t usually open up the stomach but we did today. 5 dog tags, 1 bullet jacket, 1 spark plug, loads of turtle shells, and several bobcat claws were inside. Two of the tags were legible and one phone number still worked. The owner said he had that lease 24 years ago and those were from his deer dogs. Pretty interesting.

A South Carolina hunter got the shock of his life when he killed a monster "nuisance gator" along the Edisto River in the alligator-laden ACE Basin estuary in Beaufort, Colleton and Charleston counties.

After taking the gator to Cordray’s, a butcher shop that has a side business in taxidermy in Ravenel, S.C., Ned McNeely found out the 12 foot long, 445 pound gator was not only a nuisance but a serial dog murderer.

When Cordray staff called the number, the man answering the phone "confirmed he’d lost a hound dog 24 years earlier while hunting leased property near where the alligator was killed," according to the local CBS station.

American goes to hospital in Dubai for pancreatitis — and could end up in prison for years over what was found in his urine

An American man who allegedly smoked or ingested pot in Las Vegas faces three years in prison in the United Arab Emirates after traces of marijuana were found days later in his urine, according to Detained in Dubai, a website published by his attorney.

Peter Clark, 51, flew from Las Vegas to Dubai on Feb. 24, where he went to the hospital after suffering an attack of pancreatitis. Doctors there found traces of hashish in his urine – considered possession in the UAE – and reported Clark to authorities.

He was arrested on March 3 and spent three days in a "flea-ridden cell" before being allowed back to his hotel, where he awaits his fate.

He recorded a video of the ordeal after getting out of jail.

"Lost a ton of weight, no shower, no food, nothing to drink since I got here, no sleep," said Clark

"The UAE’s arbitrary enforcement of laws and lack of predictable legal outcomes means that Peter potentially faces years in prison for legally smoking marijuana. Even if found innocent, he can be dragged through a slow and costly legal process," said Clark’s attorney, Radha Stirling.

Clark claims he brought no drugs to Dubai, nor consumed or purchased drugs while there.
