California man finds his former substitute teacher living in his car and gives him life-changing gift

Teachers can change their students’ lives forever for the better, but sometimes it works the other way around.

A young man in California raised nearly $30,000 for his former substitute teacher after learning the 77-year-old was living in his car, having fallen on hard times during the coronavirus pandemic.

Jose Villarruel said he was overwhelmed to receive the $27,480 windfall gathered through a fundraiser organized by Steven Nava, a former student of his at Fontana Unified School District, KNTV reports.

Rescuers save 2 from pickup dangling over deep Idaho gorge

Authorities say a set of camp trailer safety chains and quick, careful work by emergency crews saved two people after their pickup truck plunged off a bridge, leaving them dangling above a deep gorge in southern Idaho.

Idaho State Police responded to the accident at about 2:45 p.m. Monday, said ISP spokeswoman Lynn Hightower. A trooper found a man and a woman inside the pickup truck that was dangling, nose-down, off the side of the bridge spanning the Malad Gorge.

The gorge is narrow but is roughly 100 feet (30.48 meters) deep below the bridge, roughly the height of a 10-story building. The gorge reaches about 250 feet (76.20 meters) deep at its deepest point.

The only thing keeping the 2004 Ford F-305 pickup from falling was the set of "safety chains" attaching the 30-foot camper trailer, which remained on the bridge, to the pickup. A state trooper and local sheriff’s deputy first used an additional set of chains from a nearby semi-truck to help support the dangling pickup truck, holding it in place until additional rescuers with cranes, rope rescue gear and other equipment could arrive.

Emergency crews were then able to rappel down to the hanging truck and attach a harness to each occupant, allowing them to be safely carried back to the bridge. Both were taken to hospitals, and neither appeared to have life-threatening injuries, Hightower said. Two small dogs inside the pickup were also safely rescued, and taken to the home of a nearby family member.

SEE IT: Giant fireworks explosion kills 2 in Southern California neighborhood

Giant fireworks explosion kills 2 in Southern California neighborhood

Two people were killed when a large amount of "commercial-grade" fireworks inside a Southern California home ignited a massive explosion Tuesday, prompting evacuations of the surrounding area, officials said.

The eruption occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time in Ontario, a suburb of San Bernardino, sending a large plume of smoke in the air in the middle of a residential neighborhood. At least one other home was on fire as well as several other structures, KABC-TV reported.

Evacuation orders were issued for the immediate area, the Ontario Fire Department said. Those in need of assistance were being directed to a temporary reception center.

"They are commercial grade," Ontario Fire Department Chief Ray Gayk said in a news conference, "like you would normally see in the fireworks show," the Los Angeles Times reported.

How one man nearly lost $1 million: 'I couldn't believe it'

A Tennessee man who won more than $1 million from the state lottery this month, nearly missed out on the massive prize when he briefly lost his ticket.

Nick Slatten of Sparta, brought the ticket at Village Market on March 10 before heading home. The next morning, Slatten said he checked the Tennessee Lottery app and discovered the ticket was worth $1,178,746.

"I was stunned. I couldn’t believe it," Slatten said, according to a news release by the Tennessee Lottery. "I can’t express it. It was something else."

Slatten said he rushed to his fiancée Michelle’s workplace to tell. He said he spent the rest of the day running errands, including taking his brother to an O'Reilly Auto Parts store.

But about an hour later, Slatten said he realized he didn’t have the ticket anymore.

"I couldn’t find it anywhere," he said.

Slatten said he retraced his steps and pulled into the auto parts store parking lot, where he saw the ticket on the ground next to the driver’s side door of another vehicle.

"It’s a million-dollar ticket, and someone stepped right over it," Slatten noted.

Woman drugged, raped, found dead ID'd, charges hinge on cause of death

Two North Carolina men in Miami over spring break were arrested for allegedly drugging and raping a 24-year-old woman who was found dead in her hotel room, authorities said Monday.

Evoire Collier, 21, and Dorian Taylor, 24, are also accused of stealing the unconscious woman’s credit cards and using them during their South Beach vacation, The Miami Herald reported.

Both men were caught on surveillance footage entering the Albion Hotel with the impaired victim, a Pennsylvania resident, at around 1 a.m. on Thursday, police said.

"[Taylor] was holding her from behind, holding her by the neck so she could stand," Miami Beach Detective Luis Alsina testified during a bond hearing Monday, according to the Herald.

Police said each of the men had sex with the victim at the hotel and, at one point, Taylor allegedly forced himself on her as she appeared to be unconscious.

"The fact that the victim was under the influence of alcohol and narcotics, she could not have consented to sex with the defendants," the police report states.

While their victim was passed out, the men snatched her credit cards, phone and cash and left her in the room "without any concern for her welfare or safety," the report alleges.

First responders discovered the woman "semi nude" and dead in the room’s bed later Thursday.

Cops were able to track down Collier — who fit the description of one of the men in the surveillance footage — on Saturday in an area that’s recently been packed with partying spring breakers.

He allegedly confessed that he and his pal had met the woman at a local restaurant and that Taylor gave her a "green pill," the police report said.

Collier told police he believed the drug was Percocet, a powerful pain reliever, Alsina testified in court.

He allegedly said "that he went along with [Taylor] as they planned to have sex with the victim," the report said.

Both men, who are from Greensboro, were booked into a Miami-Dade jail on Sunday.

Charges against them include burglary with battery, sexual battery, petty theft and the fraudulent use of a credit card.

Investigators are still trying to determine the victim’s cause of death and whether it was due to an overdose from the pill supplied by the men. If that’s the case, the two could also potentially face manslaughter or murder charges, the Herald reported.

Their arrests come as local authorities grapple with crowds of unruly spring breakers who have flocked to the party city, recently even instituting an 8 p.m. curfew to crack down on the rowdy reveling.

Miami Beach police have made over 1,000 arrests since February and at least five officers have been hurt on the job, the Herald reported.

In court Monday, prosecutor Ayana Harris argued Collier and Taylor should be held in jail pending trial, noting they could face more serious charges and are possible flight risks as "both are from out of state."

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer agreed and expressed alarm about the allegations.

"He couldn’t even pick up the phone to call police or 911 after they did whatever it is they did to her," Glazer said.

Massive cargo ship turns sideways, blocks Egypt’s Suez Canal

This satellite image from Planet Labs Inc. shows the cargo ship MV Ever Given stuck in the Suez Canal near Suez, Egypt, Tuesday, March 23, 2021. A cargo container ship that's among the largest in the world has turned sideways and blocked all traffic

A Egyptian official, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity as he wasn't authorized to brief journalists similarly blamed a strong wind in the area for the incident. Egyptian forecasters said high winds and a sandstorm plagued the area Tuesday, with winds gusting as much as 50 kph (31 mph).

The Ever Given's bow was touching the canal's eastern wall, while its stern looked lodged against its western wall, according to satellite data from MarineTraffic.com. Several tug boats surrounded the ship, likely attempting to push it the right way, the data showed.

If I wanted to rob people like this then San Francisco would be the city of my choice
