Electric Cars are Changing the Cost of Driving

Some Tesla fleets are already running well past 300,000 miles with no signs of slowing.

Few have driven a Tesla to the point at which the vehicle really starts to show its age. But Tesloop, a shuttle service in Southern California composed of Teslas, was ticking the odometers of its cars well past 300,000 miles with no signs of slowing.

The company’s fleet of seven vehicles—a mix of Model Xs, Model 3s and a Model S—are as of late 2019 among the highest-mileage Teslas in the world. They zip almost daily between Los Angeles, San Diego, and destinations in between. Each of Tesloop’s cars are regularly racking up about 17,000 miles per month (roughly eight times the average for corporate fleet mileage). Many need to fully recharge at least twice each day.

These long days have pushed Tesla’s engineering to the limit, making Tesloop an extreme testbed for the durability of Elon Musk’s cars. Tesloop provided Quartz with five years of maintenance logs, where its vehicles racked up over more than 2.5 million miles, to understand how the electric vehicles (EV) are living up to the promise of cheaper vehicles with unprecedented durability compared to their conventional combustion-engine counterparts.

The results reveal Tesla to be a company still ironing out bugs in its products, but one that pushes the limits of what vehicles can do. “When we first started our company, we predicted the drive train would practically last forever,” Tesloop founder Haydn Sonnad told Quartz. “That’s proven to be relatively true.” He notes that every car except one, a vehicle taken out of service after a collision with a drunk driver, is still running. “The cars have never died of old age,” he added.

A New York City man who was released without bail despite being charged with attempted murder dragged a police officer with a car Friday before going on an hours-long crime spree, authorities said.

Takim Newson was driving a vehicle in Brooklyn when he was stopped by police officers for being doubled parked and having heavily tinted windows, the New York Police Department told Fox News. The NYPD said Newson was slurring his words and admitted to the officers to having smoked marijuana.

At one point an officer informed him that he wasn't under arrest but asked that he step out of the vehicle, according to police video footage of the incident. Clips posted on social media by the NYPD showed the driver going in reverse and dragging an officer a short distance before peeling off.

The officer sustained bumps and bruises on his knees and had some minor back pain, police said. He was treated at a hospital and released.

Speeding driver let off with warning donates to fallen officer memorial fund

A driver let off on a speeding ticket reminded authorities in Tampa, Florida that "a hero remembered never dies."

In February, Motor Unit Deputy Kevin Baker of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop after recording a driver going 15 mph over the speed limit.

The driver would have faced a $253 fine. Instead, Baker let her off on a warning due to her driving record.

It was an act of kindness that the driver didn't forget. In fact, they paid it forward two months later.

In April, the driver sent a letter for Baker, the sheriff's office wrote on Facebook. Stuffed inside was a check for $253 for a memorial fund dedicated to Fallen Pinellas County Deputy Michael Magli.

What are the odds that she's a good-looking white woman?

Deadly accident off Calif. coast believed to be part of smuggling ring: official

Three people killed and 27 others were hospitalized with a "wide variety of injuries" after a boat off the coast of San Diego overturned on Sunday.

Authorities said the group was overcrowded on a 40-foot (12-meter) cabin cruiser that is larger than the typical open-top wooden panga-style boats often used by smugglers to bring people illegally into the U.S. from Mexico.

"Every indication from our perspective was this was a smuggling vessel," said Jeff Stephenson, a supervising agent with U.S. Border Patrol. "We haven’t confirmed their nationality."

Agents were at hospitals preparing to interview survivors, including the boat’s captain who Stephenson described as a "suspected smuggler." Smugglers typically face federal charges and those being smuggled are usually deported.

Malibu beach house balcony collapse leaves 2 critically hurt, others with minor injuries

A Malibu, California, beach house balcony collapse left at least two people in critical condition Saturday afternoon, according to reports.

The house had been rented for the weekend and the owner told KCAL-TV in Los Angeles she found out around two dozen more guests than the six that were allowed had packed the oceanside home.

Between four and nine additional people suffered minor to moderate injuries when they fell on the rocks and sand, according to conflicting reports.

Ford to unveil all-electric F-150 Lightning on May 19

The first all-electric Ford F-150 will be called the Lightning when it goes on sale in 2022.

The name has previously been used on high-performance versions of the F-150, most recently in 2004.

Ford hasn't released any technical details on the full-size pickup, but has said that it will be the most-powerful F-150 in the lineup.

More information will come when the F-150 Lightning is revealed during an online event on May 19 at 9:30 p.m. ET, but Ford CEO Jim Farley said last year that it will be a real truck for real truck buyers.

"Simply put, this isn’t a gimmick. It’s a workhorse, not a showhorse destined for a shiny garage filled with four other luxury cars. It’s not for never-nevers -- never tow, never haul – it’s for serious truck owners," Farley said.

Man pulls THIS from the water

That’s one big crustacean!

An Australian fisherman recently caught a huge rock lobster and showed off the creature in a now-viral TikTok video.

In the clip, user Brodie Moss holds up the rock lobster -- which he called a crayfish -- for the camera to see how big it is, while he explains that he’ll be putting the creature back in the water.

"I’m going to put him back," Moss says in the clip. "Crayfish can live out of the water for a little bit, so I just thought I’d show you him. He’s an absolute beautiful, beautiful creature. I cannot take that home. Look at the size of him, guys."
