I can't remember what the movie was, but I recall seeing a move set way off into the future where they showed a baseball team playing and everyone was wearing triple-digit numbers, the subtle implication being that so many numbers were retired that was all that was left.  They didn't say anything about it in the movie, but for baseball fans it was a good inside joke.

Before they retire Jeter's number they have to do a proper tribute. That includes playing an entire year in the field in the missing man formation (no shortstop), plus a year of commemorative merchandise sales leading up to the actual retirement of the number in 2017. That day will be designated as a national holiday, and all work will cease. Every television network will be required to carry the Yankees game that day. Every MLB team will be compelled to retire #2 in his honor, and to construct a twice-life-size statue of him in front of their ballparks.
