This is a totaly no brainer (though that doesnt mean we go for it). Pool money aside, cap space aside etc, you have a young impact guy who fits the age group of the core we are trying to build (to field a good team through 2020).

More importantly, he can play 3B. We should have learned from beltre...plus 3Bs dont become available too often, and we dont have any in house option to replace freese. Freese next year in FA will probably get somewhere similar to what this kid is going to get..

Maybe. It's still probably cheaper than trying to compete for major league free agents and as we've seen with the strict draft cap and international cap limits it hasn't been a huge advantage for smaller markets. Tampa Bay was the only team penalized for exceeding the international signing limits a few years ago. 

 

But even assuming that the draft does help the worst teams I mentioned the draft mostly for the purpose of showing why 18 and 19 year olds aren't often given that type of contract. If young kids were all FAs like this kid is far more 19 year olds would be signing $50 million contracts.

Why would we spend the money on a young player that might be a star in the future when we can pay a player for what he did with another team? I mean, isn't that sort of our thing?

2B AND 3B are issues for this team going forward. This guy can be the answer at one of those spots. Just makes too much sense
