It isn't the amount of innings, it's the pitch count. He had thrown 17 pitches the previous 2 innings and was only at 43 pitches. He threw 49 in his previous start. The heat wasn't bothering him through the first 4 innings, so there was really no reason why he couldn't have at least started the 5th.

This inning has now been a complete disaster when it could have otherwise been avoided.

Problem is, on his next outing, he wouldn't believe Sosh will only leave him in there for 4 innings or 40 pitches .

So, he might nibble or pace himself.

Sosh has this theory, you tell him yay long only and stick with it.

I would have kept Rasmus in to start the fifth -- chances are he would have had a quick inning and then you bring in the pen for the sixth.

but that's water under the bridge now.

Grilli got knocked around tonight but to be fair, the mis-played ball by Trout is what made it a big inning --(but that ball was hit hard and well, caught or NOT).

Grilli's been effective (more effective than Frieri - not a high bar to be sure) since coming over -- guys are going to have rough patches -- tonight was Grilli's turn.

we can still win this game and Oakland is losing.........so no doomsday for a team leading the division by 10.5 games.

You say the heat wasn't bothering him but he walked off the mound in the fourth covered in sweat. You guys are arguing out of events that took place not what was sensible. Innings means warm up pitches, not just those pitches counted per inning. Add in the heat and there is reasonable cause to sit him after being solid for as many innings as they had planned.

Well yeah, people sweat in the heat. It's a natural bodily function.

And if we're counting warm up pitches for some reason, then he still threw more pitches in his previous start. And his first start.

Remember Aaron Sele ?

5 innings only, no matter what .

BTW, Joey, in 2002 Sele average 6.1 innings per outing. After that season he had an ERA of over 5 for the next 2 years for the Halos. He was pulled after 5 because he wasn't effective, not because of pitch counts or fixed innings.
