Under the old system the SEC would have been playing for another chance at a national championship and the Pac would still have only played for one. Maybe they got unlucky this year and just had a down week. Maybe they are still by far the best conference. But maybe they got lucky in a few of those BCS championships and weren't by far and away the best conference before.

Several of the top SEC teams were breaking in new quarterbacks and many had extensive losses to graduation and the NFL Draft. It was generally conceded going in that this was a down year for the SEC, and that several teams (including Alabama) were not as good as they had been in recent years.

For those enjoying the SEC's downfall, my advice is to get all the enjoyment that you can out of it now.

An Ohio State has the ultimate QB dilemma 8 months from now.

Cardale Jones?

Braxton Miller?

J.T. Barrett?

That aside, it now almost seems destined that Oregon finally takes home the grand prize.

no controversy at all, AO. if miller comes back, it's his job to lose. if he leaves, and there are rumors he may, it goes to barrett.

i like each of them. jones is just cool as a cucumber, isn't he?

The SEC for the last decade has not played a lot of tough non conference games and claim to be the best because they won their big bowl games. They had a small sample size of data for us to draw our conclusions from. There are obvious exceptions like the LSU team that lost to Bama in the national championship game but for the most part the teams didn't schedule tough out of conference and especially not on the road. This year they did the same thing and the sample showed them to be very mediocre. Live by the bowls die by the bowls.

wait,  the sec claims  to be the best only because of their bcs titles  ("small sample size ") ?

Then  you say " live by the bowls, die by the bowls "?

your anti-sec bias is showing

Lou, I'm with you on the SEC isn't crap idea. However, don't you think that the SEC has teams ranked higher than they should be year after year? Look at South Carolina, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Miss St. this season. All were overrated this year. Yes, there are other schools in other conferences that are overrated as well as independents like Notre Dame. But more SEC teams get a higher ranking than others would just because they are in the SEC, which affects the SOS. It's proven year after year that the SEC is not as dominant of a conference as the media makes them out to be.

but by the end of the year those numbers (SOS) are adjusted. And how is it proven year after year?

Mississippi State wasn't even ranked until about week 5

yeah, they've only won 7 of 9 BCS titles .

half of the 18 teams that will have played for the 9 titles are SEC teams.

Pac 12 is playing in their 2nd   (0-1)

Big 10 will be playing in their 3rd  (0-2)

Big 12 is 0-2

ACC is 1-0

SEC has been far and away the best conference in cfb over the last decade.

This year they choked.  That is all.

It's proven year after year by how top heavy the conference is. There are usually 3 schools in the SEC each year that deserve their hype. The rest are overrated and benefit from a soft out of conference schedule. Then beating the likes of Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc., to get to their 8-9 win seasons and a bowl game in which they look bad vs a real out of conference opponent.

The first bowl game I ever saw in person matched those two very teams. Floyd Little and Larry Csonka were the backfield for Syracuse. Gator Bowl, December 31, 1966.

iirc, UCLA played Syracuse that season. It was the first year I watched CFB on tv.

Syracuse also had a legendary RB earlier in time who also was a lacrosse standout, Jim Brown. In fact, Brown was a first team A-A in lacrosse.

all conferences have crappy teams.

all conferences can be said to be top heavy.

you want to compare conference bowl records since the bcs title game was established?

the sec will look a lot better than you realize

i would also argue that the 3 sec teams you listed  have been better than Colorado, Oregon St, Wash St ...

I'll give you Colorado and Wazzu but since we are supposedly talking about the past decade, Oregon St. hasn't been a pushover year in and year out. They are better than Tennessee.

The Pac 12 this year was much deeper than the SEC.

I'm not saying the SEC sucks. I'm not even saying they are not the best conference in football. But the gap between them and the rest of the power 5 conferences is not nearly as big as the media portrays it to be.

it had been up until this season.

and the AP ranked 4 pac 12 teams in the top 15 in their final poll - same as the sec

final comment -

re: " ...and a bowl game in which they look bad vs a real out of conference opponent. "

prior to this year, the sec had won 69% of it's bowl games since the 06-07 season,

which is much higher than any other conference.

the pac 10/12 won 54% of their bowl games

replacing nfl quality players with guys months out of

high school isn't nearly equivalent

You don't believe that there are other NFL quality players that are only 1 year less experienced than the Juniors that just left? Come on Lou. You are smarter than this.
