We're going to a "progressive" holiday party tomorrow. No, it's not a bunch of liberals. This is when several neighbors combine for a party. Each neighbor hosts for a period of time and then the party moves to the next house. The first couple of houses might be appetizers then maybe some sort of main course followed by desserts, etc.

I think we have like 6 neighbors involved this year. They want to only spend 30 minutes in each house which never happens but anyway, people will be pouring. You basically only have 30 minutes to finish your drink and then you're off to the next house.

One of my neighbors said he has a bottle of Blanton's so I'm looking forward to that.

My wife and I are the last house so everyone should be thoroughly marinated by that time. I don't have fancy booze but it probably won't matter. I do have a bottle of Don Julio 1942 which is kind of fancy but this is the whiskey thread so we won't talk about that. If they want bourbon it will be Woodford Reserve and if they want scotch it will be Black Label.

One of my coworkers gifted me this. I'm bringing it to Arizona for Spring Training and opening it with my brother to toast our golf games we are going to play and scores we want to forget. There should be plenty to share at the Angelswin gathering.

on the rare occasions where i've tasted hard liquor, it burns so much when you swallow. how do y'all get past that? do you just get use to it after a while?

the last hard stuff i tasted was vodka and it burned like mad. no chance of figuring out if it tasted good or had much smoothness.

I finally found one of these at Mission Wine and Spirits in Pasadena. One of their barrel picks.

65%...Holy smokes! Did it taste that strong, or was it subtle?

I, too, have the McKenna 10 year single barrel (to the right of the Old Forester). Not one of my favorites, but good nonetheless.

No subtle at all. Good high proof single barrels are loaded with flavor

That warmness going down your chest is called the Kentucky Hug. You do get used to it but don’t make a high proof one your first drink of the day. I also don’t “shoot” it so I’m not drinking a lot at once. Vodka has no flavor, terrible stuff.

Good stuff, @Blarg. I've had it and I like it with a good sized ice cube to settle it down a bit to sip on.

I can’t drink liquor straight, unless it’s shots of tequila, which I hate but tolerate.

There’s a whiskey distillery near work that we (coworkers) go to sometimes. But they also have a few mixed drinks you can order which are good. These are the 2 I like:

In general, I’m skeptical about any liquor tied to a celebrity as most just aren’t good. This has a good master distiller behind it and it’s fairly inexpensive so I’ll probably buy it when I come across it.

I'm skeptical as well, @Jason. That said, The Duke Whiskey (John Wayne's label) and Matthew McConaughey collab with Wild Turkey (Longbranch) are both VERY good. I highly recommend them both.

I have the Longbranch and I do like it but I’m also a huge fan of Wild Turkey. During Christmas, my brother brought over a bottle of the Wild Turkey 12 year he got as a gift. 🔥 🔥

Those both look good, @katie. I see my favorite cocktail at the bottom left (Old Fashioned), but that Heat Wave looks interesting. What's the ingredients for that one?
