The Price is Right

Recommended Posts

My main point is that if Price is being offered for trade this off season ... then Dipoto is going to have to get creative and make this happen. The Angels need another legit #1 pitcher to accompany Weaver if they're are going to compete next season. Vargas will not be the answer. Trumbo plus prospects will get it done!

If not Price then John Lackey :P

The Rays would want a bunch of good prospects for Price. Unless I am missing something, the Angels don't have anything to offer. And they're sure not going to trade Price for a package centered around Trumbo.

Besides that: money. The Angels can't even afford to give Trout an extension at the moment because of luxury tax reasons...yet you guys want the Angels to get Price (who is costly now and will be ridiculously costly once he hits FA)?  Money is an issue.

The Angels need good, cost-controlled starting pitching.

They might be able to afford Price after 2015, if TB holds on to him until then, and Trout after 2017.
Hamilton only has through 2017 on his contract.

Arte Moreno needs to accept the logical consequences for signing Pujols and Hamilton: by going over the luxury tax threshold for the next 4 seasons.   The team is bought and paid for, and has a $150 million/season tv contract.   Why would he be hurt by going over the luxury tax threshold for 4 seasons?

In the meantime, the Halos need to continue to build up the farm and foreign presence (giving the raspberry), become smarter with how they pay the support players, do not sign anymore aging bats to big contracts, and hope Pujols ends this charade and retires after say 2018 (allegedly age 38 at the youngest).

I think the Rays would be somewhat intrigued with Trumbo. Trumbo and Longoria at the corners would be interesting at least. Loney is going to be a free agent and may be more costly to replace. Rays only scored 700 runs ... which was good for 9th in runs scored.

Where else are they going to find a 35 HR & 100 RBI guy as cheap as Trumbo??? Of course it will take more than Trumbo but not as much as some here think.

The problem is that whatever Dipoto can offer, there are teams that would want a #1-2 starter like Price who could offer more.

It will be interesting to find out if they put him on the trade block. A prospect won't will their immediate need at first base. Trumbo is a proven power threat that fits their needs.

"Wheeler is an extremely talented pitcher, a gem that you don’t trade unless you receive a strong return. Like, say (and this is just me acting like a talk radio caller for a moment, not reporting on actual talks) David Price from Tampa Bay. We know that the Rays will think seriously about trading Price this winter, but we do not know if Price -- like Johan Santana did once -- would consider signing a long-term extension before free agency.

It’s worth checking on, because Price is already the ace that Wheeler might one day become (and Tampa Bay doesn’t mind moving stars for players under control for several seasons). Same with Chris Sale in Chicago. Or perhaps Alderson should contact the agents for Ervin Santana and Matt Garza, and move Wheeler for a top hitter instead.

No one argues with Wheeler’s talent; the idea of trading him stems in part from the realization that you have to make a painful sacrifice in order to acquire a top player. Plus, those who had concerns about his personality fitting the New York market have not changed their minds after observing Wheeler during his rookie season. If anything, those concerns have grown.

Inside the clubhouse, the general view of Wheeler during his first season was, really quiet kid, really good arm. Some teammates would support the idea of a trade, while some would consider it crazy. Same with team officials; there are no objective truths here, only educated risks."

We really have no shot at Price. Teams like the Mets can offer guys like Wheeler, which would blow any offer of ours out of the water. We NEED to go after Tanaka and make him the top priority, because impact arms like Price will be impossible to acquire.

He still hits mid 90s, and doesn't beat himself.    There aren't many better than him, just had the injury setback this season for the first time in his MLB career.

He was himself after he came back from the DL.

But give it up, people. To think we have any possibility of prying Price from the Rays is a pipe dream. Maybe when he's a free agent in a couple of years, but we don't have enough pieces that Tampa would want in a trade.

It's hard to gauge Trumbo's value.  Morales got us Vargas.  A walk year DH got us a #3/4 so Trumbo's value has to be higher than that.  Either there is a team that matches up with us and views Trumbo as the answer to their offense with a willingness to obtain him for a legit pitcher, or we don't trade him.  It's that simple.  They don't have to trade him.  They have other options in Bourjos, Kendrick, and Aybar.

Someone is going to match up with the right deal if they are truly committed to obtain pitching.

The thing about Trumbo that makes him valuable to other teams is that once he gets off the Angels he'll inevitably hit better.

The way the Angels staff has not been able to minimize his head case slumps is apparently something that he'll have to learn elsewhere.

I really do think Trumbo is a better hitter than he has shown with the Angels.

The same way Pujols and Hamilton have struggled with us.
