From The Athletic, at the GM Meetings:

“Other than to refute an MLB Network report linking Los Angeles Angels bench coach Ray Montgomery to the Astros’ opening, Brown did not indulge speculation on other candidates.”

Weird considering Morosi’s claim was that Brown himself told him he liked Montgomery

Is this some way for Perry to have eyes and ears in the dugout?

Does this give Montgomery the inside on being the next coach after working with Washington?

I too thought they were hiring an all new staff to get some different voices

Could have been part of signing Wahington that Montgomery was coming back

Let's try this again. It requires both sides.

I get that.

Wasn’t the thing though that Washington was starting to embrace some use of analytics himself in recent years.

if so, wouldn’t it be nice that the bench coach embraces some old school baseball to go with his use of analytics?

And why do you think he doesn’t embrace old school baseball?

Angels:

Montgomery is a quality bench coach that the front office values and was a finalist for the managerial job.

Montgomery:

Montgomery didn’t get a managerial job anywhere else, so he has the next best thing, in a place where he was a finalist and where the manager that got the job isn’t going to be around forever.

Washington:

Washington has to be comfortable with Montgomery for him to have the job, and likely would embrace the idea of creating a “legacy” replacement, so I don’t see why there would be any issue  there.

Given that Montgomery has the best job available to him, the Angels clearly value Montgomery, and Washington would have no known reason to reject Montgomery (so it makes sense for all three parties), why are we questioning why Montgomery is the bench coach?

They’ve replaced 7 other coaches; I think they've got plenty of different voices.

If anything, Wash is more old school than analytically inclined.

So put someone next to him that is familiar with the numbers, can give them to him, and let him decide how to use them.

Montgomery is Minasian's eyes and ears in the dugout.

Clearly, this is a common thought by some.

Is this just because he was in the front office?

If you listen to what Montgomery and others have said, he was initially installed as bench coach because they deemed him to be a good fit for the qualities they needed in a bench coach: administrative tasks, setting schedules, relay analytic info to the players, run daily meetings.

No, Washington has stated he will make the lineup card and make his decisions based on how the game plays out. He is adamant about analytics are pre game prep, in game isn't by script.

Maybe Clint Hurdle will be our defensive coordinator???

Give up the Clint Hurdle dreams.

He was representing the Rockies as a special assistant at the draft lottery.

He ain’t going anywhere.
