I'm surprised Verlander is only 15-11 against the Halos. He's going to be totally amped up tonight though. His first home start back in Houston. That crowd is going to be electric. Detmers needs to go back to pitching like he was in June.

Verlander is a first ballot Hall of Famer. I heard an interesting bit of trivia about another first ballot Hall of Famer yesterday. Jim Palmer faced 213 batters in his career with the bases loaded. He never gave up a grand slam.

Palmer had one of the best sliders ever, combined with the high heat (95mph, when it was not nearly as common as today).

Wow! That's fantastic. I wonder what's the average from those situations. HBP? Walks?

I don't know about HBP but I read where it was 12 guys he walked with the bases loaded. He said he would unintentionally intentionally walk a guy to face a different hitter who he thought he could get out. The story also said that Palmer almost gave up a Grand Slam to Rico Carty but Al Bumbry went over the wall to bring it back. Palmer was a beast.

I remember Game 1 of the 1979 ALCS. Jim Palmer vs. Nolan Ryan. Nolan out pitched Palmer, but Bobby Grich made a rare error which led to 2 unearned Orioles runs and the Angels lost in extra innings. If the Angels won that game, it would have been a different series.
