Ohtani to the padres for juan soto and hader. book it

Actually, Soto and a top prospect makes some sense….gives the Angels a year and a half to decide what to do with Soto and gives the Padres a chance to make the playoffs….

They just got rid of Nelson Cruz, opens up spot for Ohtani. Padres would need OF, I think they would keep Soto.

Not directly related, but of curious interest and how hopes are stoked by deadline/late season  trades.

In 1989 the Expos thought had a realistic chance for the pennant. On May 25th they traded with the Mariners for respected,  established left hand starter Mark Langston. They gave the rebuilding Mariners a top young prospect. Randy Johnson. Who had shown flashes, but was wild and still a question mark.

Langston did his part, but the team failed late in the season. And as a free agent he signed with the Angels in that off season.

Ironically, Johnson was happy to leave Montreal. "No more French dictionaries" he said. A not uncommon undercurrent that was a franchise handicap with some players. His career is now HOF history.

A pretty extreme result of trading an established pending free agent star for a prospect with great potential but also not a sure bet to overcome his flaws. The problem for the Expos was not Langston's performance, but that the team didn't take advantage. And his free agency was a known factor that the team gambled on and lost.

I was just pawing through some boxes of old memorabilia and found this article. The optimism was shredded a few months later.

The odds aren't great that you're going to get a Randy Johnson type if you let him walk and he signs elsewhere (70 something Comp pick) or if you make a deadline trade.....but I like my chances better with a trade....and by the way, when the Mariners traded Johnson at the 1998 deadline to the Astros, they got Freddy Garcia and Carlos Guillen....not a bad haul....the odds aren't with you but there are exceptions....
