I’d send Walsh down and I can’t believe I’m saying this but when Fletcher is healthy I bring him up.  I’m not sure who to cut loose from the 40 man roster to do this but that’s the roster move I’d be in favor of. It would give you a late inning defensive specialist at 2nd base.

I think Reyes Moranta accounted for 2 roster spots so they should be good.

Trout the last 6 games is hitting .143/.308/.286/.593. Does he have any options left to send him back to AAA to sort himself out?

Yes, sarcasm but it represents the thinking here that every player that is coming back from the IL should be able to jump right back into it and produce. I do think Walsh should probably had taken a Spring Training worth of plate appearences in AAA before being reassigned but Drury and Urshela just weren't defensively helping the team win.

Come on really?  The reason Walsh might get a very short window in a “win now” mode is his overall success in the big leagues isn’t really enough to be (mostly) certain that he will produce.

Baseball history is absolutely full of guys that had some decent success for a year or so in their late twenties, and then never were good again.  I am not concluding that this is the case with Walsh, but it is enough of a possibility that I have zero guilt in giving him a much shorter look in this situation.

I see everyone talking about Walsh's defense. First base isn't a high-priority defensive position. If they play great D at first then great, but when the position requires mostly receiving throws, it's better to have a first baseman that mashes.

Do we have a first baseman that mashes?

Drury?

Drury at 1b just means Rengifo gets more ABs. Rengifo may be heating up, but he's far from a masher.

Walsh still seems to have a good eye. But his bat speed and hitting mechanics are off. Hard to say if or when he can get back in sync. Especially mid season with every game important. Extra pressure.

In the field he looks fully coordinated and his reflexes look fine.

If he doesn't regain decent form at the plate pretty soon then they will have to dial back his usage. Some platooning, defensive substitute, pinch hitting.

There are a number of guys who can play first adequately.Defense at first is the least important position. So they can rotate according to situation. Ideally it's better to have a lineup of regular starters, but Walsh hasn't earned that role yet.

Didn't Ward originally train at 1b?

5 minor league starts, 43 minor league innings, 2 MLB innings.

It's part of why I think it's premature to jump to any conclusions about Ward, Renfroe, Moniak, Adell, and Walsh...there could be openings at 1B and DH next year, and opportunity for any of those guys to still have roles on this team.

The symptoms mentioned correspond to post-Covid complications with moderate-to-severe neurological symptoms (someone said he had Covid 3x)  From where he was to just being able to play on the field is a hopeful sign.

But there's just no knowing if he'll ever be the same player he was.  Which isn't some dire prediction, I'm hopeful, with time, he can return to what he was.

Sending Fletcher down seems to have been a positive for him…why not the same for Walsh….he’s a dead spot in the lineup right now…let him work it out at SLC…

Walsh went from zero to hitting .440 at Salt Lake, and now this is what he’s done in the majors.

Bear that in mind when looking at anyone’s AAA stats (Fletcher, Adell, Stefanic, Cabbage, etc) and sticking him in the majors.
