Mike Trout plans to spend season persuading free-agent to be Shohei Ohtani to stay with Angels

Mike Trout can be most persuasive in his effort to keep Ohtani a teammate by not getting hurt and missing 40 or so games again.

I feel like fans put way too much weight on that line. It was a long time ago and the payroll level of the Angels wasn't as far off from the luxury tax level at the time. I doubt Arte even remembers saying it. 

That said, in his chat with Heyman, he invoked Babe Ruth leaving Boston. I think he's well aware of his legacy and is concerned about being the guy who wasted Trout's career and let Ohtani walk away. I think that's why he's approved a higher payroll and it's why I think he'll do whatever he can to convince Ohtani to stay. Whether Sho stays will come down to whether he wants to stay.

Well, if Arte went to Ohtani and said- “We’re staying under the tax until the deadline and then we’ll see where things stand.  I’ll be listening to some key people, and you are one of them, about how to proceed at that point.  If you stick with us, we’ll be going over the tax for a few years, at least three if we’re in it at the deadline this year.  Meanwhile we need to keep improving the organization at all levels.”

Of course he’d have to mean it, but that might help.
