Just obtained by the Brewers from the Padres in the Hader trade... but the Brewers ran into a 40-man roster issue and had no room.  Angels could claim him off waivers ($1.7M owed remainder of 2022) and have him for next year in his Arb-3 year.  He's historically been a starter but was blocked in San Diego and relegated to swingman relief.

Been very good this year in AAA but less good at the MLB level this year.  Limited innings at both the AAA and Majors level this year.  Three years removed from Tommy John.

the Angels would need to take on his salary if they claimed him off waivers, and they aren't gonna do that.

The only way they'd get him is if he clears waivers and becomes a free agent. But at that point he can sign with anyone and may prioritize signing with a contender or a team that actually has a reputation for helping develop/revive pitchers.

What a crash back to earth, after finishing 4th in NL Cy Young balloting in CoVid shortened 2020 season.

Didn’t realize he already turned 30 in July.

I would gladly take on the 1.7 in salary and miniscule raise he's set to receive if it's betting on his upside and him contributing in relief. They'll pay 7 million each on Tepera and Loup who suck, but aren't willing to try 2 million on Lamet, who actually has the arsenal to be effective.
