Let's put this into perspective:

Since the 2018 season  when Barria had a 3.41 ERA and ERA+ of 123:

here is a list of pitchers the Angels preferred to start over Barria:

Chris Stratton,  Felix Pena, Matt Harvey, Trevor Cahill, Dillon Peter's, Julio Theron, Jose Quintana.

Yeah, that pretty much covers it.

This is why I said a few days ago that it is weird. It is like Barria slept with Arte's daughter, or something. They've gone out of their way not to give him chances.

I mean, I get trying to resuscitate Harvey. And Cahill, Teheran, and Quintana have all been solid to good pitchers. But there have been so many opportunities over the last couple years, and it is like they look everyone else but at Barria.

I feel vindicated yes, but my issue was not hyping the greatness of Barria but throwing trash out there ahead of him after he has shown he can pitch in the majors.

I feel he is a solid back of rotation pitcher and the Halos kept screwing him by bringing spending more money on trash.

I too like him.  I think he gets shit on because he doesn't have the high octane stuff everyone has these days so, the perception is he doesn't have the margin for error others have..   But when actually given the opportunity on a regular basis he's done well and today he may have shown a little more zip and maybe earned himself a couple more starts.

For years the Angels have been dying to find pitching.  If Sandoval, Barria, and Suarez all arrive this year and Canning can get himself fixed that's four guys plus Detmers and CRod in AAA.  The only one in his age 25 season is Canning... Yet another reason why I'm in favor selling.

Hitting 93-95, decent/solid enough secondary pitches, definitely makes Barria a keeper in the rotation.

Exactly.   Think about how well he pitched last season.  Yer today was his first start for the Angels  in 2021.  Even then Maddon speculated about using a starter for him.

I do recall the discussion. There is one point that I would like to concede here to you. The trend of pitchers living up in the zone has put an emphasis on velo, so if a pitcher wants to pitch that way (and more major leaguers seem to be doing it this year), I think he can forget about movement or even hitting his spot.

And really, I think a truly successful pitcher won't be so one dimensional that he's one way or the other. He might dial it up and move up in the zone the first time through the order and then dial it back and focus on movement and hitting his spots the second time through. Third time through, a lot of veteran pitchers basically just turn into junk specialists, using every off-speed pitch they can get over and relying on their defense.

Today isn't so much an outlier for him as much as it's to show what he can do, that he doesn't specifically have to be a movement and weak contact pitcher.

I don't think the Twins did a very good job of adjusting to him at all. And that can be misleading.

I agree and that’s why it makes him potentially that much mor effective if he can get guys out up above the zone. Almost like adding another pitch.

Halos starting pitching since July 3 (the day Canning being sent down):

102.1 innings, 2.82 ERA, 6 innings/start

That last stat is VERY important for a rotation that struggled previously to get beyond 4-5 innings.

Rotation the rest of the season:

Ohtani, Sandoval, Cobb, Heaney, Barria, Suarez. (Right, left, etc.)

Would have switched Heaney and Suarez, but wanted to see a little more of Suarez as a starter first.

Allows Detmers to pitch in AAA into September.

Maybe C-Rod and Bachman temporarily help to anchor the pen in 2022 along with an acquired closer in the off-season, until guys come up through the farm system?

There was a Spanish language newspaper article that had an interview with him a while back.  Barria said that marriage and fatherhood had changed his outlook on a lot of things, made it easier to take a breath and look at baseball differently.  I don't recall how it was he actually said it but the gist of it was that when all he had was baseball, he had a hard time walking away from a bad outing and now that he's a Dad, he's not feeling like he's defined by baseball anymore.   Dude is expecting baby number 2.   Like Suarez he seems a lot more relaxed than in the past.

I think Angels fans always forget Barria is in his age 24 season, Suarez age 23.   They got thrown to the wolves.

I can't like this post enough.

I love what Barria did today. But for me, showing his ability to touch 95 (a flat 95 mind you) and paint like he did today makes him eminently more valuable as a swing guy. Swing guys get a really bad rap. But a guy that can give you 2-3 innings when you need it is huge. And he can slot in the rotation when needed. He strengthens the bullpen, and might even be able to rev it up more for 40 pitches.

He is great and has been good. I just wouldn’t  take him over Ohtani, Sandoval, Detmers, Suarez, CRod, or even Canning. He’s 7th on that list easily. So use him where we are weak.

Barria has never been good as a reliever.  He had a horrible 2019 primarily coming in as a reliever.

Take his 2019 year out of the equation statistically Barria is a stud.
