A buddy of mine said he was only playing 1B because two other first basemen on the team are injured. I haven't actually looked into it, just going with what my buddy said. So maybe the dude was playing out of position? Still though.

Yep, it’s just common sense to tag 1st when there’s two outs…you don’t need to be some gold glove 1Bman to figure that out.

He reacted to the batter and totally forgot what the situation was. He just wanted to make the out with a tag. Brain fart or not knowing the rules and the situation. Smart move from the batter. He basically expected to be out, but once the first baseman hesitated and started forcing him back to home he played for time. With two out the base runner  just kept going. And the batter eventually scored from second to add insult to injury.

Why didn’t the 2B cover 1B immediately after the 1B went towards the plate?

If he did, the run wouldn’t have counted if fielding the throw in time.
