I've stated this before but I still can't comprehend how Pujols lost his plate discipline and pitch recognition so quickly. I get that as you age, your power goes down and you aren't as fast etc but Pujols used to have such a good eye and wouldn't flail nearly as much. Ever since he became an Angel, his strikeouts went up and walks went down. It's baffling.

Every player declines differently. Some do so quickly, some very slowly. It doesn't seem to correlate with how good the player is.

There were signs of his decline, though, before he became an Angel. His wRC+ went from 180 to 164 to 147 in his three final years as a Cardinal, with a clear downward trend for two years in a row.  I think Arte just overlooked that and hoped the "off year" narrative was true, and he'd at least have four or five years of 150+ (not that Arte knows or cares about wRC+, but you now what I mean).

When Albert got even worse in 2012 with a 133 wRC+, almost everyone thought it was just another down year, and that he was getting his sea leagues in the AL and on the Angels, and that he would bounce back. But it wasn't to be, obviously.

And of course there's age - I think it very possible that he's 2-3 older than advertised, which makes his decline starting 2010 at age 32 or 33, which is a very common age to start declining.
