Of course he should pitch in NL parks if it’s his turn in the rotation.  But him pitching and batting in the same games in AL parks during the season would be a mistake. Who knows, maybe he won’t run his pitch count as high as he had in 2018 and he will show the ability to consistently pitch deep into games. But until then I wouldn’t do it.

I'm trying to understand why he can't do it.

I mean, he isn't going to. I don't think Maddon will do it (although I'm certain he'll consider it).

NL pitchers do it all year. It's dumb, but with Ohtani it's actually fucking awesome.

Just imagine him pitching 7 shutout innings with 10 K's and also a 460 foot big boi bomb to the rock pile. That's visual viagra. Which is my band name.

It’s because he’s prone to have high pitch counts due to him being a strike out pitcher and he walks a fair amount.  So if he goes 4-5 innings, you either have a pitcher hit or run through the bench in pinch hitters. The good news is in games he pitches if he’s hitting you have one extra guy on the bench.

Also wouldn't that make him the first player in history to pitch and hit a home run in the same game in any AL park?  Is that cool or what?

That's not some overly complicated stat, it's quite remarkable.

Also, I'm not sure if any pitcher has hit and pitched in an AL park on the same game (since DH was available).

Irony is that in the last non-DH AL season (1972), a Halos reliever (Don Rose) in his MLB debut at bat hit a HR.

After reading Arch's post, I was gonna say we need AO to clarify this.

And AO didnt disappoint.

ESPN is ranking the top 100 players.  Ohtani is listed, and on their little snippet regarding Ohtani, they wrote:

They tracked his progress through an aggressive, data-driven offseason in which he immersed himself in more game-like situations and have watched all of his undeniable talent come through on the mound and in the batter's box this spring.

"Aggressive, data-driven offseason."  I wonder how many of our players had an offseason like this, and how much of this is a result of Maddon and Minasian.  Would be very interesting to learn about the information our players are utilizing to help improve their game.

I’m predicting between 4-5 innings/start for the first couple of months, and then 5-6 innings/start the rest of the season.

That times 27 starts = around 130-140 innings.

You are perfectly on pace here.

The idea that a healthy Ohtani would not log 100 innings was just absurd.

He's at 59 innings right now, so maybe it's a bit early for the 'I told ya so.'

100 innings was a good target for him this season.

It’s not too early.  The projection was for a healthy Ohtani to not surpass 100 innings.

Do you really think at this point there is any way a healthy Ohtani does not surpass 100 innings this season if he has logged 59 right now?

The only way he doesn’t get there is if he doesn’t stay healthy.

Not too early at all.
