If you had total control, what 3 things would you do immediately?

Here’s my updated three moves...

  • 1) Trade Brian Goodwin, Brandon Marsh, or both for a controlled SP or two. Either separate deals or combined for a higher-profile arm like Clevinger or Plesac, but either way, deal at least one of them for an arm. We need the pitching and have enough coverage in the outfield.
  • 2) Trade Andrelton Simmons for the best SP prospect you can get for him. Even if it’s just another Patrick Sandoval type. Would also accept a RP prospect, but they’d need to be closer to the Karinchak or Staumont-type of relief prospect than another Ty Buttrey. Play Rengifo or Fletcher at SS the rest of the year to determine if either are viable there for 2021. Would be willing to include someone like Suarez or Jones or another less-critical prospect in the deal if it helps get someone solid back.
  • 3) Put Bundy on the market, but only pull the trigger if you’re getting a Top 100, pref. MLB-ready SP prospect back - and perhaps another piece or two. Seriously, it has to be an overpay. Gonsolin, Gray, Graterol, Morejon, Quantrill, Patino, Plesac, Liberatore, Ian Anderson, Bryse Wilson, Muller, Ashby, with names like Keibert Ruiz, Jordan Groshans, Shea Langeliers, etc. also making some sense.

1: Buyout Pujols/attempt to trade Upton. If not, buyout both.

2: Trade Marsh/Simmons/Heaney/others in package or something for some better pitchers that are young with upside.

3: Tank for Rocker then sign Bauer for 1yr. (extend Bundy)

2021 rotation: Bauer, *guy we traded for*, Bundy, Ohtani (maybe), Canning, Detmers,
2022 rotation: Rocker, *guy we traded for*, Bundy, Ohtani, Detmers, Canning

Depth pieces: Rodriguez, Soriano, Yan

You're saying he's hitting under. 100 because he hurt his toe 1 1/2 years ago?

A grade iii sprain can aggravate forever.  He never fully recovered last year.  You lose your snap if you don't have your big toe. you're basically swinging from the heals of your feet.  People take toe injuries lightly, but not the big toe!  You lose that and you lose your footing, basically.  He's starting to come out of it, though, as good things are ahead for him, I think!

He just turned 33, but he's in the prime of career while his bat speed slowed way down; because of the toe.

Minor moves:

1. Call up Marsh and start him at LF for the rest of the year.

2. Call up Thaiss and play him at 1B, benching Pujols.

3. Play Berreto and Rengifo as much as possible.

In other words: treat the rest of the year like spring training B games. Play the young guys, give them experience. Quit worrying about Pujols catching Mays or trying to win ball-games.

Now more than ever do we need at least one of the following to come true:

  1. One of (and probably two) Rengifo, Thaiss, Adell, Barreto, Jones or even Walsh, Ward or Marsh, need to take a step forward and at least show they can put up a .750-.800 OPS in 2021. We lost two very solid bats in La Stella and Goodwin, and we're screwed if a couple kids don't step up and give us something at least close to their production.

  2. One of Barria, Sandoval, or someone else - Detmers, Naughton, Suarez - need to take a rotation spot and run with it to close the year. Don't need to be perfect, or even above-average...if someone can show they can pitch every fifth day at a 5-6 IP, 2-4 ER level consistently, it would be a huge gain going into '21.

Considering Eppler has put so much emphasis on keeping and developing these kids, this might actually be what determines his job status. He's hedged his bets on this wave of talent producing at least MLB-average production in order for us to compete, and aside from Canning and Fletcher, they haven't. If a couple of these kids show they can do it, Arte might be able to look and see signs of the farm development coming to life.

Are you talking about cutting Pujols and Upton, because buyouts do not happen in baseball. They are fully guaranteed salaries. No reason for them to be bought out unless they want a different team and are trying to make more money. No reason for another team to take on their salary unless it’s for an equally bad performer.

My Three moves:

1) Sign Trevor Bauer to a long term contract.

2) Sign Garrett Richards Or Robbie Ray to a three year deal.

3) Sign a closer, like Hendricks or Rosenthal or Yates or Britton.

I would take Richards over Ray unless of course Calloway can do something with Ray.  Richards is just a better pitcher when healthy.
