I was expecting a sweep but we just took 2 out of 3 against the hottest team in baseball

The bullpen was ugly today but they have actually been decent the past few games when the offense has been quiet. This team is built around our offense and now that they are finally turning the corner I am confident the pen and rotation will start to do so as well. We seriously just took 2 out of 3 when I know most of you guys here were expecting us to get swept like I did. Now let's go and take at least 2 out of 3 against the Dodgers.

Personally, aside from the team mashing the ball, I found Adell robbing that HR to be the highlight of the game. It demonstrated growth and enduring confidence despite that recent ugly play. I gotta hand it to Maddon for encouraging his players and teaching them rather than scorching them.

That catch honestly made me so happy for him and also a big sigh of relief.

I think the Angels are going to be off to the races after this series.

Let's take 2/3 from the Dodgers next. One game, one series at a time!

The defense has been killing them, even more so than the bad numbers with RISP..     Most of the predictive data would have you believe the Angels would have a much better record than they currently do.   Even if you just look at the most basic of info -- fWAR you can see the makings of a better team.

Team offensive fWAR -- 6th just behind the Yankees at 3.1  https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=21,d
Team pitching fWAR -- 14th -- pretty much league average at 1.6 https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=19,dThe much maligned BP has pitched better of late and ranks 17th -- so, still below average but not the disaster we all joke it is. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31

But when you look at DRS... 29th https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=0&type=1&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=11,d    The interesting thing is the defense hasn't been bad all over, it's just been bad at the wrong time, and mostly it's been LaStella and unfortunately Adell.

Yeah La Stella has been pretty bad, but I really like his bat. Upton has too just from the eye test.

The metrics so far say he's neither hurt nor really helped defensively, he's actually got a positive DEF, but he's not really put up enough innings to make a call.  That being said, I've seen what have looked like bad jumps and iffy routes so, I definitely see what your talking about.

La Stella has been a butcher early on.

Has he been better at 1B? I know his range at 2B is severely lacking. I was hoping that Rengifo's performances in the minors would translate in the bigs...maybe it still will, he's still young. But can you imagine if he was close to what he was in AA/AAA with the Halos?

High OBP, walks. SB, good contact and some pop! I really love his range and his defense has really improved at 2B from what I've seen so far this year.

I think I shared this here @Inside Pitch but a saw a tweet from Jared Tim’s with a heat map of outfield defensive positioning from last year to this year and there’s a sizable difference.  This year the outfielders are playing deeper which then effects Trout’s DZR I would think or Upton.  We’ve seen two balls Upton would have caught if his positioning to start the play would have been different to start.
