The problem isn’t the days, it’s that the owners don’t want to pay the players to play the games.

They dont want to have to PAY them to play the games..   More playoff games? SURE!!!!   Why?  because players don't actually get paid for those, their yearly salaries end with the regular season -- they get a portion of the gate.

If the players are getting a pro-rated sum for each game they play, how are they not getting paid for games 51 through 60?

The issue is they don't want them to play more than 60 so they can play more postseason games..    Think about this -- they are wanting to expand the playoffs, have more teams play, more games played...   but more in season games?   "Well that's just totally not going to work"..

It's a joke.

Why won't it work?

You lost me.

Sorry...   Basically ownership wants to limit the in season games played -- the ones where players would get their pro-rated pay..    At the same time they want to increase the size and scope of the playoffs, add more teams more tiers -- no idea. The end result is more postseason games would be played -- games players wouldn't make their pro-rated salaries for.  That's why the two sides are fighting over the number of games.

So ownership in one breath is saying -- "no no, we can't play that many games", and then in the next breath asking the players to play more postseason games.    That's the disconnect.  The only reason that don't to play more games is to suppress player costs, while at the same time attempting to make more for themselves.

Right, but getting paid for 60 games results in more pay than in 50 ganes.

The week after, right?  This year it was supposed to be July 14th.  I think it's been a little earlier some years.

One week to get players where they need to be seems reasonable.  Three weeks summer training seems reasonable

And they’ve said the season would start on the 19th.  So Sunday after the All Star game.  Also you’d think there’s zero harm in starting a day or three earlier.

And my guess is they are thinking that getting paid for 70 results in more pay than 60.

At the end of the day it's...  why play fewer games where they are guaranteed to get paid, to play more games where the other guy gets paid?

Ultimately the players know they can file and win the grievance.   They have the CBA and they have an agreement in place.

It's all very dumb.

So if we don't have a season, then next year when the virus flares up we don't have another season, then the following year after the collective bargaining agreement expires we have a season-long strike...okay so we're looking at baseball MAYBE by 2023.

I'm out if that happens. Finished as a fan.

When is cricket season?

If it catches on in the US replacing baseball, does that mean the kids will be playing Larvae League instead of Little League?
