A very rare close up of a wild Pangolin, taken in the Masai Mara, Kenya

Scientists ID scaly mammal known for its meat as possible coronavirus host

Scientists in China say the pangolin, a type of scaly anteater, could be a possible host for the coronavirus that has killed over 636 people and infected nearly 31,400 globally, according to a report by Reuters on Friday.

“This latest discovery will be of great significance for the prevention and control of the origin [of the virus],” South China Agricultural University, which led the research, said in a statement.

Reuters reported the genome sequence of the coronavirus strain taken from pangolins in the study was 99 percent identical to infected people, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.

Chuck, look I don’t wanna get accused of anything here, but I don’t feel safe posting here with the Asian guys around.  I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume they’re all infected.

For everyone’s sake, can you quarantine them to their own forum until this thing blows over?

So does this mean you won't watch my pangolin for me while I'm quarantined?

Coronavirus outbreak fuels scarcity of medical supplies as infections surpass SARS epidemic

Coronavirus outbreak fuels medical supply shortage in China, as more than 37,500 infected globally

The deadly coronavirus outbreak that's infected more than 37,500 globally and more deaths than the SARS epidemic in the early 2000s spurred China's government on Sunday to address the growing shortage of medical equipment.

China’s National Health Commission said as of Sunday there were 89 more deaths on Saturday, bringing the total death toll in mainland China to 811 with 37,198 confirmed cases.

Almost all of the new fatalities were in and around Wuhan in central Hubei province, where illnesses from the new type of coronavirus were first detected in December.

CORONAVIRUS DEATHS SURPASS SARS FATALITIES; AT LEAST 811 HAVE DIED

In addition to the cases in mainland China, Hong Kong has had 29 cases, including one death, while Macao has had 10 cases.

Not good, considering they were going to be opening Wuhan City back up in the next few days.

I just can't imagine how economically and physically it's possible to shut down a city twice the size of Los Angeles, and make it look like like 7 am on Thanksgiving morning for a few weeks.  How are the people surviving?  Do they really keep weeks of food on hand?

just found this from a buddy on facebook:

From a European friend living in Xi'an, which is quite a long way from Wuhan:

GROCERY SHOPPING PROCEDURE, FEB 2020

Write down a shopping list. Only one person per household is allowed out from the apartment complex gates every two days, so you don't want to forget anything.

While at it, put the pen in your pocket, you'll need it later. Also take your ID card or passport, and the new, temporary pass you need to exit the gates.

Wear your mask. You're not allowed to leave your apartment without wearing one.

Head to the elevators. Order one by using your elbow to push the button. Inside the elevator cab again use your elbow to select the floor. In the very unlikely event of someone already being in the elevator, don't talk, just hold your breathe. Paranoia is your best friend.

Get out from the building by pushing the entrance door open with your shoulder. Remember, no hands. Ever.

Ride the scooter to the gate. Be prepared, it's a mess there. While five guards are watching, fill your information to the list on the table by using your own, virus-free pen you brought with you. The guards don't mind if you make a photo of the list, so you can easily get names, ID card numbers and phone numbers of hundreds of residents, and sell them to some con artist.

Get on your scooter, again show your exit card to another guard, and finally ride out of the gate.

At the store entrance, again write down your information to another list. No one is really guarding this list, so again you can easily get names, ID card numbers and phone numbers of hundreds of people.

Let the lady spray your hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Let the man behind the lady check your temperature, now from your wrist. Earlier they used to measure the temperature from your forehead, which must have shown every second customer suffering from hypothermia after riding to the store on a scooter in close to freezing weather.

Do your shopping. Many people are wearing disposable gloves, let your paranoia develop to a new level as you're thinking how much better they are protected.

When done with shopping head to the cashier. You don't want to pay by cash because you don't want to receive the change that someone else has just had in their hands. Anyways, who uses cash anymore, you pay by showing a QR code from your smartphone.

At the door ask for another round of the hand sanitizer, even if you're going out.

Ride home. At the gate show the card to the guards. They'll check your temperature and spray your feet with whatever, and let you in.

Next possibility for shopping in two days. Hope you didn't forget anything.

Happy China times!

Stopped in my local CVS to pick up a prescription and the pharmacist is wearing a face mask. Also several large signs warning about the coronavirus.

Kind of creepy.

Were screening at jail right now.

Which is a good thing. But its funny when the intake nurse asks random cholo "have you been to Wuhan, China?" And theyre like "nah, fuck garden grove, eh"

Evacuee confirmed to have coronavirus in California as US total reaches 13

One of the evacuees who was transported from China to California last week due to coronavirus fears was diagnosed on Monday with the new virus, becoming the 13th known case on U.S. soil, reports said.

The patient left Wuhan -- the epicenter of the virus -- on a State Department chartered flight carrying 167 evacuees that arrived at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego on Wednesday.

The patient is under observation and isolation at UC San Diego Medical Center and is "doing well," according to the hospital.

“CDC is conducting a thorough contact investigation of the person who has tested positive to determine contacts and to assess if those contacts had high-risk exposures,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The evacuee was among four people -- three adults and one child -- who were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center with a fever or a cough, according to the CDC.

The CDC said all four patients had tested negative for the coronavirus on Sunday and were returned to MCAS Miramar, according to Reuters. However, on Monday, the CDC said that additional testing showed the patient had tested positive while in the 14-day mandatory quarantine.

Another patient was also transported to the hospital on Monday for evaluation and will remain there for further tests. It's not clear if they were part of the four people originally tested.

“Both patients are doing well and have minimal symptoms,” the medical center said per the news organization.

Nearly 540 U.S. nationals have been evacuated from Wuhan to the San Diego base. They have been subject to the CDC’s first public health quarantine in 50 years, according to Reuters.

It marks the seventh confirmed case of the virus in California and the first in San Diego County. Other cases in the US have been confirmed in Arizona, Wisconsin, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington state.
