Yeah, Moustakas(Boras) misread the 2018 FA market. Ended up signing in March for 1/5.5.

I’m certain Eppler offered him more than that before he signed Cozart.

In 2017 he ended up on a 1 year contract back with KC @$8.7M after turning down a QO. It would have been a bargain compared with Cozart.

It totally would have. But I think what RBM is saying is that Moustakas had better offers and turned them down, then he was forced to go back to KC.

If he was willing to come here for what KC paid l, Im sure he would have been here.

Hes like what I assume Calhoun will be. And how some recent guys have been. Some agents havent caught up to the current reality, and still think there is a way higher market for their guys....

^^^This.....Eppler didn't mess it up, Boras did....as badly as it could have been messed up....cost his client lots of money and a place to play near his home....

This is interesting as it relates to Cole.

You are hearing more and more stories like this from Boras clients. Martín Maldonado also turned down 2/16 from the Astros, ended up with 1/3 or something from KC and fired Boras. Gio Gonzalez was asking for 2/24 in December and ended up with 1/3 in May.

Will this make Boras more likely to settle for a lower number earlier than he had his sights set on?

My guess is his ego will cause him to double down to prove his greatness and go for even more outrageous contracts than he had previously.

Not good.

Surprising that Boras has any clients at this point.

Sometimes he is right and it works to hold out a while longer....but he also misses it badly sometimes... I'd want my agent to have a good read on the market...You've got to know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em, as somebody once said...

Its not just Boras. There have been other players in recent years that would have been huge paydays if they hit FA even 3-4 years prior, but ended up scrambling for a job at the end of the winter.

The market and game changed pretty dramatic in the last 5 or so years.

Remember Howie turning down the QO from the Dodgers before the '16 season? I believe it was around 16-17M... and then he ended up signing with them anyway for 2/20.

I’ve thought about this also but ultimately the players say yes or no. I do think we may see some Boras clients say yes sooner because they know what happened with Mous, Maldonado and others. Who knows if it will be part of Cole’s process. He is going to be in demand so Boras can probably string it out.

I think reading the market is what I want my agent to do....Waiting obviously worked for Harper and Machado but they were the elite guys last year and anybody could have read that....it didn't work with Moose or Keuchel or Machete....If I'm not an elite guy, I want an agent that reads the market and tells me the truth... You are right that the player ultimately makes the decision but I tend to think that Boras pushes all his clients to wait and squeeze every last dollar out there...it's just his thing...I don't think it is a coincidence that his guys get caught waiting too long....But, that is just my thought.....I would put more weight on what @Jeff Fletcher says....
