On September 15, 1971 Larry Yount of the Astros came into a game in the 9th inning. He was officially announced, then injured his arm during his warmup tosses on the mound. He left the game and never appeared again in the majors.

Actually, Chance would be correct for starting pitchers. There are two relievers though who each had a sub 1.40 ERA and pitched at least 50 innings. One held the record for a little over 40 years until the other broke that franchise record.

Franchise record, and here's the next clue that should give the answer away. Like another reliever signed as a FA from the same team, this guy started off really well and set that franchise ERA record, and then became mediocre pretty quickly.

This one is too hard (I think) to pose as a question, so I'll just give the answer.

 

Pee Wee Wanninger ended one consecutive-game streak and helped start another. As a rookie, he replaced Everett Scott at shortstop for the Yankees on May 5, 1925 to end Scott's then major league record of 1,307 consecutive games. On June 1, 1925 Lou Gehrig started his famous 2,130 game consecutive streak when he pinch hit for Wanninger.

Gehrig started the next day in place of Wally Pipp, who was suffering from a migraine headache and dizziness.

Only two pitchers struck out Ted Williams three times in a game. They each did it one time.

Name at least one of them.

 

Hint: Pitcher #1 struck out Williams more often than any other pitcher during the mid-to-late 1950's. 

 

Another hint: Pitcher #2 is less well-known. His career spanned from 1929 to 1953, though.
