“With the position of this organization and the financial strengths of this organization, it’s not in the DNA here to rebuild,” Eppler said. “We’ll continue to invest. We’ll continue to invest throughout this season, with a mind for this season, with a mind for the future and this winter with a mind towards competing and contending year in and year out.”

And yet they’ve been rebuilding since the day he got here.

9th or 15th round pitchers might take 5 years but pitchers drafted in the first 2 rounds normally are on the mlb squad within 2-3 yrs at the latest. You guys can all justify picking these 2 shortstops, but our first 2 picks should've been projectable arms that can join this team soon.

And if there weren’t any?   How many people does it take to tell you how wrong your “logic” is before you pull your head out?

Maybe you were not up on the Draft this season. It was position player heavy and pitching weak. What they could have drafted for pitching would probably end up as bullpen help. You can pick up bullpen pitchers every year though waivers instead of using draft picks.

Last season the Angels chose 27 pitchers of their 40 picks including picking 11 pitchers in a row starting in the 3rd round. The two players picked in the first and second round were Jordyn Adams and Jeremiah Jackson, two highly touted prospects.

This season they picked 14 pitchers in a row following the 1st and 2nd pick in the draft. In total 28 pitchers selected. They picked shortstops because they are usually the Alfa dogs of the diamond, the best athletes with quickest reflexes and range that can be converted to any other position. Trout was a shortstop in High School and that worked out pretty well.

You never draft for need in the first two rounds, you pick the best possible player for whatever your metrics say they will be successful in the ascension to the majors. If that coincides with need, great. If not you are wasting your pick on a guy less likely to be of value whether that be a catcher, pitcher, infielder or outfielder.

Do you know how many pitchers have pitched in the majors who were drafted in the first round of 2016 outside of the top 10?

Two.

From the 2015 draft?

Three

A lot of solid posts in this thread.

I 100% agree that the “angels cant or won’t spend to build a winner” is complete horseshit.  I honestly don’t understand how a fan that has followed the team at all can believe that.  The Angels have had horrendous luck and have had a rough go with a lot of FA acquisitions.  That of course is consequence of trying to fill so many holes.  It’s for sure getting better, all you have to do is look at all the home grown players that are on the major league roster.  Almost all of them are at least solid with nice upside.  That is excellent.  Eppler has mostly been very good, but he’s swung and missed at the major league level a decent amount.  It’s tough.  As Strad loves saying, the deals haven’t killed the club so there’s something to be said for that.  I still have a lot of faith in what Eppler is doing.

The Angels do need to start ratcheting up the intensity to win now though.  It’s not great that they have such a solid core and just haven’t been able to get into the playoffs.  The core of guys.  Trout, Ohtani, Simmons, Upton is very good.  Certainly a match for any other teams core.  So it would be miserable and unfortunate if they can’t build around them in time for that core group of guys to get into the playoffs together in their primes. They’ve got to get some guys at the major league level.  That means they’re going to have to spend money and make smart use of the farm system to get those guys.  Obviously it’s pitching that they need.  But I also would hate for them to ignore a guy like Anthony Rendon if he comes to market.

I believe that the Angels will do their part and try to get the players.  We need players to step up as well.  If they’re a winning team in the 2nd half maybe with some luck we’ll get that wildcard.  But offseason 2019/20 they’ve got to make shit happen.

They invested.

They invested in Latin America, analysis systems, and building a farm system....  They also spent big on filling the black hole in LF and in securing the single most important asset in MLB.

Now that the foundation is built, they can invest in finishing the project.
