They invested.

They invested in Latin America, analysis systems, and building a farm system....  They also spent big on filling the black hole in LF and in securing the single most important asset in MLB.

Now that the foundation is built, they can invest in finishing the project.

This cant be driven home enough.

The last few years, they had two major hurdles. Three if you count bloated payrolls.

The first was the lack of depth. Both at the bigs and in the minors. The lack of talent was compounded by the org being utterly destroyed by injuries. The two combined were an atom bomb.

Regardless of how many here, and how many in the sports talk world opined for it, there was no magic bullet that was going to solve it. We werent down one pitcher or one bat. We were down a whole ataff, and several bats. With no money, and nothing to trade.

So they smartly built internally. There was no other choice. Everyone pissing and moaning about not signing people fail to grasp what has happened in baseball over the last 5-6 years.

What old dudes were in the all star game this year? Were harper and machado there? The game has gone young. Its not going to change back. The youth movement forces teams to draft well... and the draft penalty attached to qual offers made the route we took necessary.

The second huge hurdle was leaped over when trout was locked up. This was the focus the last 3 years...you couldnt make a decision one way or the other until you knew the answer to that.

Going forward, everything is different from yesterday. The trout question is answered. And with ohtani and adell coming up, you have your core. More important, you have options now.

Again, it would have been stupid to base a billion dollar business in a short 3 year timeframe. The supposed "trout window". The one where trout was going to leave if we didnt blow our wad soon. Throwing money at big money FAs would have been stupid to support the trout/pujols window. The trout/ohtani/adell one is where the moves will start to happen. Which makes far more sense.
