Gotta say, Pena looks as if he's really benefiting from the opener strategy.

As a starter, pre-opener:

• 3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 16 ppi
• 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K 19
• 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K 18 
• 5.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K 14
• 57% of his pitches are for strikes
• 7 BB to 14 K in 17.1 IP
• averaging 17 Pitches per inning

With the opener:

• 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K 16
• 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K 15 
• 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K 11
• 66% of his pitches are for strikes
• 0 BB to 20 K in 14.1 IP
• averaging 14 Pitches per inning

That BB:K split is pretty damn dramatic. Seems like he's able to pitch a little more efficiently and crisply with the first inning out of the picture.

La Stella is gonna hit 20+ HR this year.

La Stella had 10 HR in 947 PA to his career before joining the Angels. 
He's now up to 9 HR in 104 PA as an Angel.

I think they applied some of Calhoun's power increase mechanics to Tommy and it's working.

Im not sure we can draw that conclusion till we see how many times hes facing the tops of the order in that list, it could be smoke padded from seeing the bottom more... but i like the numbers i see and im one that legit hates the opener strategy.

Oh totally, I agree it's far, far, far too early to draw any conclusions from either data set, but so far it's pretty encouraging. The BB:K ratio is impressive.

indeed, but its kinda hard to read too much into it if its against a lot more 7-9 vs 1-4 type guys... but it does seem to be doing what its intended to do so... party on
