Report: Yankees, Dodgers are MLB's most valuable franchises

The New York Yankees are the most valuable franchise in Major League Baseball, according to Mike Ozanian of Forbes.

The total value of the Yankees is an estimated $4.6 billion, while the Los Angeles Dodgers ($3.3 billion), Boston Red Sox ($3.2 billion), Chicago Cubs ($3.1 billion), and San Francisco Giants ($3 billion) round out the top five.

Among the bottom-dwellers are the Oakland Athletics ($1.1 billion), Cincinnati Reds ($1.05 billion), Kansas City Royals ($1.025 billion), Tampa Bay Rays ($1.01 billion), and Miami Marlins ($1 billion).

The average baseball team is worth $1.78 billion, according to Ozanian, who reports the increase in total value is eight percent more than a year ago.

It has gone up quite a bit since Moreno took over. Some of that is the overall growth of MLB’s revenue, but his ownership group really has changed the perception of this organization, I think. It’s a great fan experience. They have the best player in MLB. They’re moving in the right direction after gutting the farm system. All signs point to great things in the future.

those two things aren't alway directly related, especially when you're looking at a single season

It’s owned by the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority. I couldn’t see if any of the Astros principals are part of that organization. The park is also connected directly to Union Station, which is a national historic site, making private ownership of that unlikely.
