Interesting read,,   https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/27593569/how-many-bad-teams-take-beat-astros-dodgers-yankees

According to Baseball Prospectus' third-order winning percentages, this year's Astros and Dodgers actually are the two best teams since 1950. It's amazing that these teams have coexisted in the same league, occasionally playing against each other, standing next to each other, and had it even look like baseball at all. It's a baseball miracle.

Cody Bellinger is a really good baseball player and may win the NL MVP with Yelich out (although Rendon is making a case for himself). But check out this split:

Through May 19 (46 games played): .405/.485/.791, 17 HR, 221 wRC+, 3.7 fWAR (1st in majors)

May 20 - Sept 15 (100 games played): .258/.372/.550, 27 HR, 133 wRC+, 3.4 wRC (25th in majors)

He had an absolutely epic start, but has cooled off considerably and for most of the year has been your garden variety quality slugger. It will be interesting to see what he does next year.

Mr. Upton has 275 Ks and Cole has 292 Ks.    Each likely has 3 starts remaining due to the Asstros having a day off for each of these two weeks, and competing with the Skanks and Dogs for best MLB record.

iirc, no team in the modern era has ever had two 300 Ks pitchers in the same season.     Do they do it?

Wow, I know Justin Upton was having a bad year but I didn't know it was THAT bad.

Looks like the Dodgers dodged one here. Video of him performing sex acts with a 13 year old is no bueno.

Hopefully the LA Times cartoonist skips this one.

New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances suffered a partial left Achilles tear during his season debut on Sunday, the team announced Tuesday, according to Lindsey Adler of The Athletic.

Betances suffered the injury while jumping on the mound in Toronto, manager Aaron Boone said, according to James Wagner of The New York Times.

He appeared to suffer the injury while dancing off the mound after recording the second out of the fourth inning, erroneously thinking the strikeout was the final out of the frame.

Dude probably feels like an asshat for injuring himself that way.

As far as the Yankees go, it's a good thing they still have their 39 million dollar year trio of  Chapman, Britton, and Ottavino around to help pick up the slack...

Three guys -- 39 mil.

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man, I love the idea of these clownish in-game celebrations ending seasons. I wish it happened more often and we could make a fun compilation video at season’s end

Considering we saw one first hand (Kendrys), I don' think it's so much about being a grumpy old man and more about choosing not to temp fate.

The baseball gods are a cruel and heartless bunch.

At least Kendrys was celebrating a win. This genius hadn’t even finished the inning and was dancing

Pirates need a new closer:

Pittsburgh Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez admitted to Pennsylvania state police that he attempted to have sex with a 13-year-old girl, according to a criminal complaint released by authorities Wednesday, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Vazquez was arrested Tuesday morning. He was charged with pornography and soliciting a child, statutory sexual assault, and other charges. A judge denied Vazquez bail.

The victim is now 15 years old, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Pennsylvania police said Vazquez and the girl met while he was in the bullpen at PNC Park in 2017 when the girl was 13. Authorities added that Vasquez communicated with her afterward via text and social media.

The pitcher also told police that he exchanged nude photos and videos with her.

The girl told authorities that Vazquez drove to her home in Scottdale in August 2017, according to the complaint obtained by Lacretia Wimbley and Shelly Bradbury of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The girl, who now lives in Florida, told police that she entered Vasquez's car on the passenger side. She said the then-26-year-old subsequently removed her pants and put part of his penis in her vagina.

Vazquez told police Tuesday that he and the girl had "sex but not really" because he couldn't fully insert his penis.

According to the complaint, Vazquez texted the girl as recently as July 2019, indicating that he wanted to continue having sexual contact with her. The complaint also stated that Vazquez told police Tuesday that he initially refused to have contact with the girl because she appeared to be 16 or younger.

Police said the girl's mother discovered communication between the two after the family moved to Florida. She called the police, which prompted the investigation in early August.

Police also said there's no indication of additional victims.

Vazquez's arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
