I've read in multiple places that the Angels just allowed the Braves to claim him without compensation.  It's just a cost-cutting move.  I think they're getting literally nothing for him.

This is true.

Rivera was once a pretty decent defensive catcher.

not a bad pick up by Atlanta -- they can delay his arrival by a few days and he can report Sept. 1 when rosters expand.

Rivera can be a defensive replacement and perhaps start Sunday games to give the Braves catchers a little end of the season break before the playoffs.
