Notes from the Eppler Media Conference Call on Ohtani Today

I don't want to see him try to pitch again this year, then tear the ligament and be out until sometime in 2020. You just know that will happen. It's almost a foregone conclusion with this snake-bit team.

We need offense, desperately, and he's a guy who can actually hit a baseball. Put him in the cleanup spot and bump Albert down.

Fletcher, Trout, Upton, Ohtani, Simmons, Pujols, Maldonado, Kinsler, Hermosillo/Calhoun.

OBP's of this lineup: .360, .458, .338, .372, .376, .284, .301, .279, 9th spot unmentionable. Maybe switch #8 and #9, at least Kinsler is above .300 and has some pop in his bat. If Calhoun continues to improve then he plays every day and hits 8th.

Best case is to have a productive Calhoun, Kinsler, and then Fletcher before Trout. After that you've got Upton, Ohtani, and Simmons who can drive them in or keep the line moving, and Albert of course, but he needs to be out of that top five.

Eppler was asked how ligaments heal and he said scabbing and then scarring. And, for Doc, he was asked if there was healing and the answer several times was yes.

Eppler.was asked. If Ohtani could be a better hitter than we have seen so far if he just concentrates on that. Eppler replied that it remains to be seen. Only time will tell.

Eppler was asked of Ohtani needs TJ surgery. Here is his direct quote. "No doctor has told me (Eppler) that Shohei needs surgical intervention at this time."

Eppler.was.asked.if Ohtani will join the team on the road. Eppler said it remains to be determined. Ohtani is day by day. He will do BP today and is scheduled for BP tomorrow.

Eppler.was asked if hitting will further endanger Ohtani's ligament. Eppler said that he asked that question to the doctors a number of ways. The doctor feels comfortable with Ohtani beginning his hitting progression.

Eppler was asked if Ohtani had received any other treatments. Eppler said that Ohtani has received the biological treatments from 3 weeks ago and nothing since.

Eppler also talked about how much of an important part of the club that Ohtani is and that they always want to have as much of the 25 man roster that left Spring Training together. Eppler didn't want to speak on behalf of Ohtani or put words in his mouth, but knows that not playing doesn't sit well with Ohtani's hunger to play the game. 

 

That is pretty much how the presser ended.

Honestly I just want him in the lineup to inject some excitement into this team. I really think he is great for the clubhouse. Also I miss Ippei, who is the true superstar here.
