Angels pick Tyler Smith, senior reliever from Canisius.  Tons of Ks and BBs.

pitched for the Valley Blue Sox of the New England Collegiate League over the summer (wood bats I think) where he was almost literally unhittable.  0.00 era over 19.1 ip with 38k, 6h and 4bb.  Had a 1.82 era there in 24.2ip with 29k the year prior.

White Sox draft Gunnar Troutwine...

C'mon... Clearly a character created for Star Wars out to destroy Mike Trout.  Or someone to whine about Trout on AngelsWin.

Notes from the Jordyn Adams press conference call:

Angels "thrilled to introduce him" and that he was "quite an athlete".

Jordyn made an opening statement that he feels really good, was blessed to be a part of the organization and wants to make it known that he is happy to be a part of the Angels organization. He's ready to get to work.

As noted earlier, Adams said he has a deal in place already, but it isn't signed yet. It will be made official in the next few days.

On being selected by the Angels, it was a real "eye opener" for him and his family.

He was home with the draft with friends, family, and administrators from school. Billy Eppler made the call. He wasn't really paying attention and his dad handed him the phone. Eppler said that he loved everything about him (Adams) as a player and was ready to make it official.

On the decision between football and baseball: he has played baseball all of his life, and his skills getting better lately made it an easier decision.

As for not playing for his dad: His dad was behind him on the decision. Whatever was best for him (Jordyn) was best for him (his father).

Jordyn is aware of the depth the Angels have in the organization at the position (1st round pick last year as a CF), but said that it is up to him, his work ethic, and it will all work out.

As to why the early deal, he didn't want to get behind in the organization. He wants to get to work and acclimate.

He does not graduate until next week on the 13th.

Personal observation, another player with poise, good public speaking skills, and handled the media well. Definitely following more of a mold that we've seen with our picks over the last couple of years, especially our top picks like Adell, Marsh, Jones, Canning, etc.

another btw

Joseph Booker who goes by JoJo for some reason was our 5th rounder last year and didn't sign opting to play for the Jaguars of Univ of Southern Alabama.

7.15 era in 34ip with 19bb and 40k.  Led the team in hrs allowed and wild pitches.

So he'd fit right in with the bullpen

If anyone ever has a chance to ask Eppler or anyone on the halos, I would be interested to know if they are actively negotiating or have pre-arranged slot money for these guys as the draft is evolving.  And whether it affects who they take next.  For instance, if they know how much money they've essentially already spent to this point or damn close so they would take a couple of higher upside HS or college SO/Jrs instead of a senior sign.

In other news, the Mariners have selected nothing but college players so far, something the MLB.com guys went out of their way to point out and question on the broadcast today.  Never change, Dipoto.

Dipoto doesn't have time to develop players... he knows he'll be out of a job before they move up that far.

Eppler's draft have now become pretty predictable too.  But in a good way.

5 high ceiling picks in the top 6.  College Seniors with picks 7-10.  If a pitcher, big K rate.  If a position player, 1 stand out tool (teed up for tdawg).

11-16ish.  More high upside guys that slid and could be signable.

17- 30ish.  College guys

through 40. HS guys that aren't likely to sign.

@Angel Oracle this name will take you back... Orioles draft Kevin Magee.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Magee_(basketball)

The basketball player died way too young.

Put UC Irvine on the basketball map in the early 1980s.   Street and Smith's magazine even had him as one of its' five All-Americans in its' 1981 publication.

Died waaay too young, and by all accounts a great guy.

Humerous note: In Magee's first UCI season, LB PG Dave Shutts picked up not one, not two, but THREE charge fouls on Magee that helped foul Magee out of the game.   Considering Magee's physicality, that took a lot of guts on Shutts' part.

Was reading a Mariners message board to see what they thought of their draft so far...  Lots of people talking about how it was smart of Jerry's front office to focus their draft on high floor college players because it will mean an infusion of MLB ready talent.  Say what you will about him, he sells his vision well.

I do not miss those days.
