Someone posted a picture or video of a retractable net along the lines at a minor league field.   If a Cal League team can do it, my guess is MLB can figure it out.   If you’re worried about fans getting foul balls that’s an easy fix.  Every ball that hits the net gets tossed into the stands.

tdawg can be the Designated Tosser

The nets aren’t even a big deal.  You get used to them and hardly notice them after a couple of minutes in my experience.  It doesn’t diminish anything.

The sooner they extend the nets further and protect the people sitting all the way down the lines the better.  There’s no need for anyone to get tagged by a line drive.  And there’s no right or wrong way to consume a baseball game.  This idea that if you aren’t locked in prepared to field a ball you're an asshole and deserve it is just absurd.

Are more people actually being hit or is it more in the news now because of the internet and social media?

We hear about everything a lot more.  I'd imagine it happens more, too... exit velocity and all that... but the former is a much larger part of this

And what the heck are these fences for? You would think that the players reaction time is a lot faster then the fans sitting 5 feet behind them.

That was to keep Mo Vaughn from falling into the dugout.

Most players and coaches have their heads above those the entire game.  And... if they do... in the back of the dugout... they are still in danger. It isn't high enough to be effective at blocking line drives. Players in the dugout are in more danger than fans on the loge level.... or beyond the dugouts.  There just arent as many players and coaches

I’m actually looking forward to all of the new netting. The fans are way too distracted to pay attention to every pitch.

It’s because the fans haven’t adjusted to the new juiced up baseballs yet. They’re coming at them a lot quicker now.

You dont think we hear and see a lot more if every incident?  Just look up that story of the latest incident. Every story has a photo of the girl.  That didn't used to happen. Now, if the TV camera or stll cameras dont catch it, cell phones will.

Flukes happen every day.

It is more dangerous walking the stairs on the view level. I've seen many people fall up there

Well as tank talked about earlier in this thread, we don’t have a lot of opportunities to dodge 100 MPH baseballs in our every day life, however we climb stairs regularly in our lives.

Like everyone here we’ve all been to tons of games and we probably have all witnessed one or two a fans get injured at some point even if it’s minor. The one thing that we’ve all witnessed is the hundreds of near misses. Those are the fans that they’re trying to protect. The majority. Preventing an accident is a lot better than explaining how it happened.

Because people dodged the ball?
