Angels to Acquire Justin Upton

Justin Upton was the #1 prospect in MLB and was seen as a future superstar. Obviously he didn't fully become that but he showed flashes of it. MAde it to the majors at 19 yrs old, was an All-Star by age 21 and was an MVP candidate by age 23. Issue is his performance fluctuated from season to season. All in all hes settled in as a well above average player who has serious pop in his bat

Just turned 30 last week. Don't see him opting in but hoping he does.

I really wanted him a few years back. Early years he was trout like. Bonafide 30 for 30 threat.

Few things to consider. Upton has a bad rep...lazy, flakey, etc. That said, hopefully its true he was burnt out the tigers were scuffling, and getting here with trout fires him up. Second, if he truly is planning to opt out, then at bare min we get a guy who going to be playing his hardest to get a better contract. Then we wont have to worry about the first part.

He reminds me of Adrian Beltre without the great defensive skills. He shows flashes and seasons of tremendous production but can't seem to hold it together for back to back seasons. Beltre didn't become the player he is until age thirty when he actually became consistent. Perhaps Upton can do the same. Similar power numbers and they are both black. Could he follow a similar career arc as Beltre?

Great point there, gotta think that's what the situation is. If Upton doesn't opt out, Halos will have to toss a prospect and probably a decent one since they'd be getting Upton for 4 more yrs after this season

Decision on the PTBN is before Upton's opt-out decision. Tigers have a list of players to evaluate further (although they can't see them for long since the season is almost over). Then they pick a player. If they don't like any of them, they get the cash. But they are expected to take a player.

It will not be any of the Angels top top prospects.

Thanks for the clarification.  One of the reasons I'm glad you're here.

My 2 cents on the opt-out....

It won't be a financial decision because there's not that much more money out there for him, if at all. He is 30 and has had 2 average years in the previous three. (Of course, if he goes nuts for a month and does a Beltran in the playoffs, this changes.)

I think it will come down to how much he likes playing for the Angels and wants to stay.
