Barcelona, terror attack?

Recommended Posts

Terrible.

On a separate but related note when we were in Barcelona in 2015 we spent all of 10 minutes along Las Ramblas.  Within a day of arriving we spoke to 3 different people who told us to avoid it completely or as much as possible as there was better shopping and food in other areas that were safer and cleaner.  It was a tourist trap with a lot of guys just sitting around who would pick pockets and some of whom say/do what they want as wicked mentioned.  Someone my wife knows went in the last year had the bottom of her bag/purse cut open by someone who stole most of the stuff she had on her.

Spain has had some of the worst terror attacks.  (remember the train bombings)  I'm surprised they aren't talking about closing their borders.  Because a while back, a terror attack in Spain was a regular occurrence.

what they're doing right now isn't working so it's time to explore other options in re: immigration.

Barcelona police killed a suspect who was attempting a second vehicle attack near a checkpoint.

Later they killed four more suspects at another location and foiled some sort of terrorist attack there.

Getting very dicey over there.

there was also an explosion at a house, killing one. they're thinking it might have been a bomb-making factory for all of these toolbags.

Spain used to have a ton of terror bombings, but i think it was mostly homegrown

Interesting development. The imam who is alleged to be the "spiritual leader" of the terror cell may have been killed in an explosion at a house in a nearby town. His own home has been raided by police. The cell members had been preparing bombs to launch a large-scale attack, including possibly blowing up a cathedral in Barcelona.

Investigators at the site, where controlled explosions were carried out on Friday and Saturday, later discovered a stockpile of explosive material including more than 100 gas canisters. Local media reported that a crude and unstable homemade explosive known as acetone peroxide was being produced in the house. The explosives - known as the 'Mother of Satan' are favoured among jihadis and were used in the 7/7 bombings.

Neighbours speculated that recent high temperatures in the heatwave known as Lucifer might have triggered the explosion.

They could not confirm or deny reports in two Spanish newspapers that the cell's "Plan A" was to blow up the Sagrada Familia, the iconic Barcelona cathedral designed by Antonio Gaudi.
