He was a tremendous baseball player in high school and drew the interest of at least five major league teams. The Cubs were even prepared to offer him a $50,000 bonus. He went to college instead, then had a successful career in a different sport. He turned 80 yesterday.

It was four home runs in a game, but he did set a MLB record in that game in 1894 with 17 total bases, a record that stood until 1954 when Joe Adcock had 18. Shaun Green of the Dodgers more recently got 19 total bases with 4 home runs, a double, and a single. That's the all-time record.

Just to clarify that Gehrig matched Lowe's four home runs. Nobody has ever hit five home runs in a game, but Gehrig came close as his 9th inning drive was caught by the A's Al Simmons in deep center field at Shibe Park, some 460 feet from home plate.
