Of course they can't force them to sign.  You.missed the point.  Since Trout is under contract for the next four years the Agels have an advantage in negotiating with him.  The closer he gets to free agency the less advantage the Angels have.  That's why I say start the ball rolling now.

Trout is in complete control of this. If Trout wants to stay here longer than his current deal, he and his agent can take care of that right now. Trout is planning his wedding with his east coast high school sweetheart so his future will be a family decision. We have no idea what that will be. We also shouldn't assume that more money will keep him here. There's plenty of money that will be available from other teams. Yes he can request and probably get an extension right now but he can just as easily request a trade to a contending team.

It's his ball to roll.

We all know this, so it doesn't need repeating, especially multiple times in the same thread.  I completely agree that there is zero harm in reaching out to Trout and his agent about an extension but there's everything to lose by not letting him know you want him there forever.

I thinks Trout knows this ... to think otherwise is foolish.

The Angels had their chance and blew it. I'm guessing Trout is looking back thinking, "what was I thinking asking for 13 years?"

Did Trout really want a longer contract?  Honest question as I've head it mentioned here but never read anything that confirmed it. If so it's just a head scratcher that they didn't get it done while they give a 10 year contract to a 32 year old Pujols.

Regardless it doesn't hurt to kick the tires and try to extend him.  If he isn't interested for whatever reason and the team isn't competitive in 2019/2020 then I think you have to move him while you'd obviously get more for him in 2019 when some team would have him through 2020.  The best bet is them getting together a competitive team in the next few years and him wanting to stay.  If I were in his shoes I wouldn't be interested in an extension right now because I wouldn't want to commit to a franchise that needs to improve and has as many question marks as the Angels do.

How do we know that hasn't been done? It's a no-brainer that the Angels would like him to play his entire career here. Maybe Trout is listening to his agent, attorneys and family rather than the experts here at Angelswin. Remember Teixeira's wife saying that she wanted to be on the East Coast? Trout's life is going to change very soon and so will his priorities. I don't really think he gives a hoot about where we want him to play.

Who knows if they or haven't.  How do all the failos know he values playing back east over playing his entire career with one team?

The Angels fans that say they will no longer be Angels fans if Trout leaves are failos. If Trout ever leaves it will be a personal decision that we shouldn't take personal. When Gretzky was traded to the Kings the Oilers owner received death threats. That's how stupid some fans can be about their favorite players. We have no idea about what's going on internally. Maybe nothing!

I've been a fan for over 50 years and I agonized over losing Bobby Knoop, so it will kill me to lose Trout.  Lots of superstars are obnoxious and the fact Trout is a great ambassador to the game and certainly the greatest Halo I've ever seen will make me pretty upset if the Angels don't retain his services.  I think they will because he's our Ted Williams,  Mickey Mantle, George Brett, you know the franchise player every team had but ours before he came along.

My first game at the Big A was against the Yankees and Mickey Mantle got more ovation than any of the Angels.

Wayne Gretzky wasn't a baseball player.  Phil Silvers named his character "Bilko" after the PCL Angels Steve Bilko.

If Arte Moreno can't handle Mike Trout with the same reverence Silvers showed for Bilko, he might as well have a bear trap snap on his wig-wag while Angel Stadium entertains the crowd to another rendition of Buttercup.

I've had two heroes in all those years of devotion to the Angels.  First was Jim Fregosi.  Second is the greatest Angel of them all, Mike Trout.  Get this one right Arte.

Do they even know about Trout on the east coast? I'm sure that Bryce Harper is well known.

Honestly, he does get talked up on the sports radio, but a lot of it is fantasy deals about how much the Yankees need to give up to get him.

The latest was a package that addresses all our needs. Headley, Sabbathia, and Gardner, plus a few prospects. Where do we sign?

PS, Pretty unanimous that Bryce Harper is a J.O. And that Trout is the guy.

You can speculate that if you want.  Fact is you don't know what Trout is thinking.  He says he is happy with the Angels and he seems happy by his attitude so I am "guessing " he isn't saying "what was I thinking of asking for 13 years.

It is true Trout may want to play for a team that has a better chance of winning a World Series or may want to play for an easy coast team.  We don't know.  However that is more the reason to not wait to long to get the negotiations started again.  The Angels have an advantage right now.  You don't want to wait until the last year because anything (including  career ending injury) can happen during the next for years and only the Angels can guarantee him a big payday until age 40.  No other team can do that because he could get injured during the next four years.
