In case anyone is wondering, the player in my Walter Johnson story is Dorsey Lee "Dixie" Carroll. My father worked for Carroll's electric company after returning from military service during World War II, and Carroll loaned my parents the money to build the house that I grew up in. Carroll played 15 games as an outfielder with the 1919 Boston Braves, batting .265 in 59 plate appearances. He had 13 hits, with three doubles and one triple.

Carroll has a Wikipedia page, although it is only one sentence.

That dude had three girl names and a stripper nickname.

Well, that was almost 100 years ago. Things had a little different meaning back then.

There has always been a strong connection between Carroll's family and mine. I am still in contact with two of his grandchildren.

I remember George Carlin telling a joke in the 1960s about Willie Mays being traded to the Mets for the entire Mets team, and they still had to throw in $500,000 in cash, an Eskimo and a kangaroo. When Mays was ironically traded to the Mets in 1972, the price was a bit lower.

It is shame those days are gone.  How often do crowds of people gather, mingle, socialize and wait with anticipation for bits of information about a baseball game.  Pictures like this reminds me how much human contact is lost in today's world.

Yep, and then there are guys like Soto, who are drafted high, and then choose not to show up.

You traded me one year didn't you?  I don't recall not showing up. I apologize Strad.  Had some cloudy years when I was a drinker and didn't respect people's time very much.  Please forgive me.
