2017 Draft Pick Standings

Recommended Posts

If I'm recalling correctly the scoring guys are saying this is the best draft class in the last few seasons.

The Detroit Pistons still took Dark Millicic 2nd over Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh so having a high pick in a strong draft class still isn't 100%. But it's better than having a high pick in a week one.

How many catchers are available?

Still, a million years later, you wonder what would have happened if portland took jordan over sam bowie...air and glyde...

J.J. Schwarz, C, Florida (2017)

Following a stellar freshman campaign in which he played 70 games as part of Florida’s College World Series run, Schwarz didn’t perform up to his capability for Team USA, but he still showed the undeniable hitting tools that could make him the top overall pick in 2017. Plus raw power is his calling card, which was epically displayed at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park when he hit a moonshot over the Blue Monster — and above the Tobacco Road Sports Cafe on the concourse — in Team USA’s second game against Cuba. His smooth, right-handed stroke features a lofty swing plane that accounts for the ample backspin carry to his pull side, although its length adds a swing-and-miss element. Still, there’s enough contact ability and aptitude to become at least an average hitter with above-average game power.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound backstop has already developed impressive strength, with more to come as he fills out the lean frame between his wide shoulders. The athleticism isn’t quite fast-twitch, but it’s sufficient to keep him from getting too stiff behind the plate as he adds bulk. The biggest questions surround his defense, as his hands, actions and solid-average arm strength may be just good enough to catch in the major leagues, but it’s going to take some work to become at least average defensively. Regardless of what glove he wears though, the bat plays anywhere and could someday anchor the middle of an order.

Steer clear of ANY and every Stanford SP....  Marquess is a great coach and he knows how get the most out but he is death to pitchers - Terry Collins level pitcher abuse.   The one guy he didn't run into the ground was Mike Mussina, and that was more about Mike being able to get through a game with 80 pitches thrown than it did Marquess' unwillingness to let him throw 300.

Mike Scioscia should use more "small ball" tactics & aggressive base running with the players & even the ones who are terrible runners.

It would go down something like this:

Eppler: "Mike maybe we need to use more SmallBall & aggressive base running to win games"

Scioscia: "I can definately roll with that !"

*players caught stealing & players being picked off goes up 100% along with a insane losing streak*

Scioscia: "Well That was our worst season ever"

Eppler: "We got the 1st overall pick in the 2017 MLB draft ! Yes !"

It's a crapfest out there. The Standings for the draft has become a huge log jamb for 3rd place.

1) Atlanta at only 44 wins is running away with the first pick.

2) Minnesota 49 wins is just holding on to that spot and any accidental win streak could drop them quickly to 4th.

3) Angels, Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Arizona, San Diego at tied at 50 wins

4) Milwaukie, Oakland 52

5) Philadelphia dragging up the rear with 56 wins.

14 days until roster expansion where many teams may accidentally improve by putting some talented hungry young players on the field trying to prove they belong. Luckily the Angels don't have any those guys so they could very easily become the favorite to grab the #2 spot and run with it.

Streak notes, the Angels stopped their losing streak at 11 and are currently 1-9 in their last 10 with San Diego right on their heels with a 2-8 run. Cincinnati is trying to put themselves out of the top 5 with a 3 game win streak and a 6-4 record. Go Reds!

RHP version of Kershaw?   Not many HS pitchers are selected in the top 5.   Even Kershaw was selected 8th overall.

Right now, it is early and speculation so far (translated: a lot can happen between now and next June), but according to several, he is far and away the best prospect out there at this time. Two plus-plus pitches, one developing plus pitch, mid to upper 90s heat, so I'm told. Someone is likely to use an early pick on him.
