It's also important to remember that the U.S. runs an annual budget deficit.  If we were to get serious about balancing the budget it would require a combination of tax increases and severe cuts in social programs.

Relatively, we're not really.

That might have to do with nearly 50% of the country not paying anything in federal taxes. The upper middle class gets screwed because of the lower class not having to pay anything close to a fair share. There is no reason to give people who make $20k a year all the money they paid back each year at tax time. I am sure that makes me a dick, but if they paid even 10% maybe I wouldn't have to pay what I already pay.
