It’s time to remind ourselves of the evils of socialism

Recommended Posts

It's no different! They are publicly funded services.

Saying it's just basic stuff the government should provide anyways is not an answer.

if gov't doesn't provide basic services, then what good are they? whether it's state, local, or federal, we give them our consent to provide these things and to collect our tax money for them.

socialism says all of us must be financially equal. that's a much different thing.

Seriously? I give up.

I thought libs are supposed to be smart.

All of it is redistribution.

Anything that Bernie says "should be free" has to paid for by somebody.

Something that's free to you, that I pay for, is a transfer of money from me to you.

It may not be x dollars from my checking account into yours.

But it's still redistribution.

You gave up for all of three minutes.

I want more of Jay's and Adam's stuff. Especially if it's guns. I'll settle for cash though.

Mi casa, tu casa, ese.

No guns at my house besides my biceps and the python in my pantalones.

It's an ideological difference. Some believe that we're all in this together and should share resources, that being part of a community (or nation) means not only taking but also contributing; others believe that we're all alone and should do whatever we can to get ahead, competing with each other. Of course things get really interesting when we try to do both: individualism and communalism.

Those are the only two options?

Interesting.

This is a country founded on freedom.  I think people should be free to give as much or as little as they like.  I definitely don't think the government should ever be in charge of it.  Giving the government more power is definitely the worst possible outcome and it is what Bernie covets.

I could understand that viewpoint, but I very much disagree with it.

When you're the richest country in the history of the world it should allow more services to give it's citizens a higher quality of life.

Theft is wrong, no?

That article is silly, yet sly in that it is basically crafting a false argument. First of all, it goes back to Red Scare stuff from the 40s and 50s, and in a way shoots itself in the foot by mentioning how people accused FDR as being a socialist. Further, it cites the USSR, Cuba, etc as examples of why socialism is bad, but then says that Denmark, Sweden, etc aren't socialist, they're free market -- but misses the point that those are the countries that Bernie is pointing to as how stronger social programs can be integrated into capitalism. People complain that Bernie wants to turn the US into Denmark - which, this author mentions, isn't a socialist country! It is a capitalist country with very strong social programs through high taxation. It isn't laissez-faire capitalism, but no country actually is (or could be, without being a total plutocracy...oh wait).

Bernie is NOT trying to turn the USA into a communist country like North Korea or the USSR or Cuba. That is just crazy, right-wing paranoia. These sorts of articles are just a new Red Scare and misinforming.

Of course maybe I'm wrong and Bernie is secretly a Stalinist. Maybe.

Well we are half way there AJ, we are already a "highly taxed" nation. I'm not an unreasonable man, once they show they can actually live within the budget of the money they already get, then I would consider giving more, but until then, absolutely not.

Just a hunch, it is people that are succesful, the ones that are already paying more than their fair share, are the ones that are having issues with communalism. I sometimes wonder, actually I probably know the answer, do I pay more in taxes each year, than the socialists on here make in a year. I'm sure it would be very close, especially since "very few people that post on here will be affected by Bernie's tax increase".
