IGNORED

It’s time to remind ourselves of the evils of socialism

Recommended Posts

That article is silly, yet sly in that it is basically crafting a false argument. First of all, it goes back to Red Scare stuff from the 40s and 50s, and in a way shoots itself in the foot by mentioning how people accused FDR as being a socialist. Further, it cites the USSR, Cuba, etc as examples of why socialism is bad, but then says that Denmark, Sweden, etc aren't socialist, they're free market -- but misses the point that those are the countries that Bernie is pointing to as how stronger social programs can be integrated into capitalism. People complain that Bernie wants to turn the US into Denmark - which, this author mentions, isn't a socialist country! It is a capitalist country with very strong social programs through high taxation. It isn't laissez-faire capitalism, but no country actually is (or could be, without being a total plutocracy...oh wait).

Bernie is NOT trying to turn the USA into a communist country like North Korea or the USSR or Cuba. That is just crazy, right-wing paranoia. These sorts of articles are just a new Red Scare and misinforming.

Of course maybe I'm wrong and Bernie is secretly a Stalinist. Maybe.

You don't understand what socialism is, in fact we already have it. Every country needs some degree of socialism. Without socialism we would have no roads, no police, no firefighters, no public schools, no social security. Should I go on?

WRONG

those are basic services that the government should provide.

except for social security that is.

Forcibly taking my money and giving it to someone else is not a basic service, it's robbery.

Cute.

Seriously though, even if Bernie wanted us all to wear Che Guevara tee-shirts and get in line for toilet paper, do you think he'd have a snowball's chance of doing so?

I think a more serious concern is the Hitler potential of a Donald Trump.

Understandable that you would want to change the subject

So let me get this straight. You don't mind being taxed for services like infrastructure and things you might personally benefit from. What you don't want to be taxed for is health care, education, and things that might help others. Is that right?

this thread has taught me that having public schools, law enforcement, and a system of roads is socialism.

It's no different! They are publicly funded services.

Saying it's just basic stuff the government should provide anyways is not an answer.

WRONG AGAIN

Everyone benefits from roads, schools, firefighters, police, etc.  Basic state and local services.  No I don't mind being taxed for state and local services.

Also everyone benefits from having the military, and postal service.  I don't mind being taxed for that.

Income redistribution is not a basic service, it's robbery.  It's also a fact of life.  But I don't have to like it, or vote for more of it.

Point out the part where Sanders says he is going to go into your bank account, take x amount of your money and give out free money to everyone else.

He says the massive transfer of wealth that has gone to the top if a big problem, and I agree with him. I don't believe he has said what he is going to do about it though.

I think Jay feels that taxation for universal health care and affordable education is "income redistribution."

All of it is redistribution.

Anything that Bernie says "should be free" has to paid for by somebody.

Something that's free to you, that I pay for, is a transfer of money from me to you.

It may not be x dollars from my checking account into yours.

But it's still redistribution.
