Don't believe everything you hear ... good authority or not. Angels weren't the only team interested in Simmons. I get you not impressed with Eppler but he's a lot more knowledgable of the situation than any of the so called 'good authority' sayers.

Why would the Angels want to rebuild? We have a strong core group.

Valid point, but how does playing for third place matter?

There are really only 2 states a team can be in... playing to win now or rebuilding with an eye on winning at some point in the future.

Where are we now?  What is the plan?

You typically do not see teams with the best player on the planet playing for third place or having no vision or plan, which is where we seems to be.

Our Core, really consists of 2 players, maybe 3, based on those who are above league average guys, is that really that strong?

Disagree that there's only two states - this roster is constructed in a way that it can be highly competitive like 2014, mostly the same cast, or it can falter with a lot of holes. We don't know, the 'experts' don't know, and there's a good chance the FO doesn't know. So, state #3 is wait and see.

With a new GM in place (especially coming after a half-season of basically a band-aid FO) there's been a lot of turmoil and volatility and I think it makes perfect sense to move a little slower and cautiously, get the new folks in place, new scouts, new coaches, new 'proprietary metrics' and assess what can be done rather than firing from the hip in the offseason after all that's happened.

They can still capably sell off pieces at the deadline, and they could still be competitors at the deadline.

Actually, we really are. Bedrosian, Morin and Rasmus are a dynamic young three. We have Mahle and Paredes on the way as well. But where the depth really resides is in the pitching that's being used as a starter but very clearly are relievers. DeLoach is a LOOGY, Austin Wood has a huge fastball, Alcantara should be a closer, Jeremy Rhoades profiles as a good middle reliever and Jake Jewell is filthy.

The Angels as currently constructed have 10+ young relievers that are either ready for the show or are within 3 years. So relief depth isn't a problem.

Woah! :D

So as it turns out, we could've acquired Rymer Liriano for any halfway decent RP in our system, and we chose to pass. Fantastic freakin job there Eppler and Crew.

I feel like Eppler is done and is no longer working unless he gets a tip on a cheap, mediocre peanut, that will not cost him a dime.

Oh my! :D

Funny story, I was actually going through and looking for something stupid I'd said in this thread, but you did it for me.  Ironically, I was right that we'd be fine in relief, just not for any reason I said, (and I listed a ton of reasons, which just says I was wrong a ton).  As it turns out, we ended up being fine in relief because Billy Eppler is fantastic at recognizing value and piecing together an effective (and cost effective) bullpen.

I'm just pulling your leg(s) (Chuck too!) a little. I've said silly stuff just go back to 2012-2014 and you'll probably find some gems in there somewhere.

Going back and reading everyone's post I think everyone was a little gun shy of Billy especially after what DiPoto did to this team.....I know I was.

Morin was Of Course just picked up by Jedi & the Mariners after he was released by the Royals. Angels cut him loose last September.

Oops, I just realized this was last year.

still pretty funny  that Dipoto picked up Morin

Dipoto picking up Morin was like a reflex action.  Someone whispered in his ear that the Ohtani was going to the Angels, and he instinctively picked up the phone and called Kansas City, ".....got any former Angels...great, send him over for whatever.".
