Can dig it. He's not terrible with the bat for a C, has AL West experience, solid CS%, not too expensive.

Bandy is better served getting everyday reps in SLC and being ready in event of injury or struggles. If Perez has a rough year, I'd feel comfortable with Soto getting more playing time, and having solid depth like that is a big improvement over last year.

I like this signing. I really do believe that Eppler will stay away from high priced long term deals until some heavy wood comes off the books after 2016. Eppler > Dipoto IMHO.

I was in favor of catching depth, but more someone to serve as AAA catching depth because Bandy is ready for the majors.  But Soto's fine.  I basically view him as the equivalent of Jett Bandy. A good defensive catcher that can get on base and hit for some power when everything is clicking right. 

 

Personally I wouldn't have spent the 2.8 million, mostly because they didn't upgrade at all.  I wouldn't call it a waste as the Angels now have better depth than they had before.  I just think I would've pursued a different avenue and allotted that small amount of money elsewhere.

They obviously don't think Bandy is ready or they don't want to go with such a young catching core. You need a veteran catcher on the squad to teach Perez and to step up in case he struggles. Best case is Bandy destroys AAA and Soto gets traded near the deadline.

I'm pretty comfortable paying $2.8 million for a backup catcher who put up a .700 OPS last year. He probably won't put up the same numbers playing half of his games in Anaheim but we could have done much worse here.

I like it. I'm guessing he and Perez will basically split time at the start of the season, with the idea that Perez will slowly grow into a more starting C role. If Perez struggles, then Soto seems like a pretty steady alternative.
