2002 Angels

Hard to believe it was 13 years ago when this team won the world series. Still seems like yesterday. Only 2 players (Lackey and K-Rod) left in the major leagues. Ramon Ortiz and Alfredo Amezaga are still playing in the Mexican league. Does anybody have player updates and what they are up to. I know Ben Molina is coaching now. Not sure of anybody else.

Troy Percival is coaching at is HS Alma Mater, Moreno Valley HS.  Doing great things for their program and putting a lot of his own money into as well.  Class act all the way!

He left the high school to be the head coach at his other Alma Mater UC Riverside.

I also find it interesting that this will be a team that does not have a single HOF player. GA would have had a chance if he remained healthy. K-Rod can have a chance if he gets another 300 saves.

It is interesting. If GA could've held on a little longer he might have been able to reach those 3000 hits and sneak in to the HoF.

Scot Shields is arguably one of the best set up men of all time, a position that doesn't get you into the HoF.

Salmon had HoF talent but just couldn't stay healthy. He's likely one of the victims of the steroid era (assuming he was clean).

Glaus was on a HoF pace early in his career but just couldn't keep it going.

John Lackey has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since that season, but he will receive very little love from the HoF I am sure.

Washburn was one of the best pitchers in the AL for a good stretch, but certainly not HoF worthy.

KRod is a guy who might still have a chance. He's been a bit of a disappointment since his days with the Angels ended, but he's having a great year this year. If he can keep this up for a few more years he might start up the discussion.

And were on a 35-15 run after starting off 6-14.

Early in that amazing stretch were the two consecutive games with Eckstein grand slams. After that series, we traveled to Cleveland and beat the Indians by the score of 21-2 two days later.

The winning streak actually began after an extremely frustrating 1-0 loss in Seattle, in which we left the tying run on third base twice in the late innings. That put our record at a franchise worst 6-14. Some were calling for Scioscia to be fired. The Angels had ended the previous season (2001) by losing 19 of their final 21 games.
