One year rental. Why would you advocate trading resources for a short term fix on a player well past 30? I thought the Tony Reagins era was over.

If it's a "short term fix" why does his age matter? He's still every bit as good as Kendrick ever was, and would give the Angels an every day 2nd baseman until Baldoquin or Yarbrough are ready to take over.

It is a one year fix and you have to build a package good enough to coax Tampa Bay to let go of him. A package no other team can beat. So if the guy is the difference maker then his price is going to be as well.

The Angels have already worked trades to address 2nd base. They made those with a long term plan in mind. This would just be scrapping those plans for some other player that was available to negotiate for before they made their current commitment.

I sincerely doubt the Angels see Rutledge, Giavotella, and even Featherston in their long term plans for 2nd base. If they do, that's kind of sad. Those guys are all making next to nothing and the Angels gave up next to nothing to get them. It isn't as if they traded away big pieces to obtain them. The Angels needed utility players and they now have a glut of them. Their future at 2nd is Yarbrough, and to a lesser extent, Baldoquin (who the team sees as more of a SS). Since Yarbrough won't likely be ready until 2016, why not get a player who is good enough to hold down 2nd for a full year until he is ready?

His age, "decline", and rental status will all factor in to his cost.

Like Kendrick? We gave up a 5.4 WAR 2nd baseman with a higher priced one year contract for a starting pitcher. So if Nic is all stoked on a 5.6 WAR second baseman then his price tag is going to be more than Kendrick.

The Angels are looking at the depth as depth to get them through this season and bridge to Yarborough and Baldoquin. The Angels are not in need of spending what got for Kendrick to get in return... Kendrick.

Do you think the value of the piece our pieces they would have to trade for Zobrist would be less the Heaney?

Depends on what they are looking for. The Angels now have a lot of young pitching depth. Trading Heaney or Newcomb would be counter-productive but they have a lot more young pitching in their system. The Angels also have Cron who would be an enticing package for anyone who wants to trade.

You just said the Angels were looking at their future when they got those guys. So which is it?

And who says they would be trading what they got for Kendrick for Zobrist? I don't think anyone has suggested that as being a good idea. If the Rays want Heaney then you walk away. But if they want Cron and someone lesser like Nate Smith then you gotta think about pulling the trigger. The Angels get better for 2015 without greatly sacrificing their future to do so.
